March 2013 Moms

I think I have entered March!

My original due date was April 1.. well, after a couple harrowing appointments, I found out that my baby is a tiny little thing (has assymetrical IUGR) with my doctor thinking that there is a problem with my placenta that is not 100% nourishing my little babe.  Being that the baby's weight has remained at less than the 10th percentile over the last couple of appointments, I am now having ultrasounds/NSTs/appointments twice per week to watch the baby.  We are almost at 37 weeks and 4 pounds 4 oz (lil peanut!).  Has anyone in this group experienced the same type of thing?  While I do get excited thinking that I am going to have this baby some time this month, I am still nervous about the overall health of my baby.  The baby has been doing great with the NSTs and on ultrasound but my doctor feels as though 39 weeks is as far as she will let me go (to allow for further lung and brain development) as many of these babies thrive once out of the womb where they can get adequate nutrition.  Interested in any of your stories/advice.. but please don't scare the crap out of me!

Re: I think I have entered March!

  • My first DS has assynterical IUGR. My placenta wasn't working properly, basically it was aging very quickly. I was induced at 36 weeks and he was 5.3. No nicu time was needed, he was just a tiny thing!

Now at 17 months he is 24 pounds and completely normal. You would never know his size at birth!

  • I'm a NICU nurse, and I've seen many IUGR babies. They are usually perfectly fine, just smaller than average. They will watch things like blood sugar and temperature stability since their small size can make those things difficult for baby to control. Otherwise, she should have a perfectly normal hospital stay. Good luck momma!

I'd also be sure your car seat is safe for a baby as small as 5lbs, because babies do lose weight the first few days, and some carseats are not adequate for a tiny baby.

  • My daughter had asymmetrical IUGR cause by a placental problem also. We found out at 28 weeks and I had weekly BPPs and NSTs ever since. She did not behave for these and I was induced at 38 weeks. My daughter was more of a chunk than we thought at 5 lbs 6 oz but still such a peanut. After all the worries she is PERFECT. If you have any questions about any of this I will be happy to answer. I know it's very stressful but more than likely everything will turn out wondefully.

ETA: You can email me at vpmihelcic at gmail.com I'm definitely willing to answer any questions or just be a sounding board! It's an emotional journey
