We started Zantac a few weeks ago due to terrible screaming related to reflux. We managed to control the screaming with the Zantac and a complicated plan of DH and I doing shift care to facilitate propping her up nearly all the time. When we went to our 2 mo. well check a few days ago, we'd had a bad night due to a stimulating grandparent visit, and told our doctor things weren't going that well even though before the stimulating visit I was pretty happy that we could usually control her screaming despite the effort it took. The doctor said it wasn't reasonable to hold her all the time and that we might have more luck with Prevacid. We started that a couple days ago, and the screaming every 10 minutes is back, and no holding will fix it. Can anyone tell me how long we should wait for this to work? I want to go back to Zantac, but if Prevacid takes longer to work, we can wait it out. It's killing me to see her hurt so much. And, as a note, when she slept though some feeds due to sleepiness from her vaccinations, she woke up and was the most alert I've ever seen and we saw her first smile and first "talking." I hate that reflux is making her so miserable that she can't even meet milestones, stay alert for very long, or be anything but miserable most of the time, so any ideas will be appreciated.
Re: zantac or prevacid?
Prevacid can take 7-14 days to fully kick in. For us, Prevacid has worked better than Zantac.
I'm sorry you are having a rough time with reflux. It sucks.
Have you thought about getting a pediatric gastrointestinal consult? we haven't done one yet since Julia doesn't seem to be in very much pain anymore, but that's our next step if things go downhill.
we had our little guy on both at the same time, made the switch way easier!! good luck
