violence in the office - vent

Back story: I'm working up until the day I'm due. My tolerance is at an all time low right now (as I'm sure most of you can relate). To put it nicely, I work with a 'DIFFICULT' lady. Very demanding, very flamboyant, VERY RUDE. I could go into great depths about how much I don't care for this particular person and the rest of personnel seems to agree. She's mid-50's, single, never had children, never been married, sibling is homosexual - no kids there. We're talking ZERO experience, yet there's always some kind of unwanted advice spewing from her.

The story: These past few weeks I've been tolerant of her comments. "God, your a$$ has gotten huge!" and things of the like. I'm not by any means a large person. I started off at 110 at 7 weeks and have gained roughly 25-30 pounds. I'm carrying pretty much like toothpick holding a basketball.Due on the 20th.

I've let my direct boss and the one above him know the situation and asked not to be fired if something equally inappropriate comes out of my mouth. They're both really laid back and I love working for them. I really just want to say to her "Your f***ing MOUTH has gotten huge", but I've held my tongue thus far. Today was the last straw. Not only did I get the huge a$$ comment, but apparently I now have jowls that she so lovingly pinched. No joke. Also, she felt it was appropriate to smack my butt with her paperwork as she walked away. I run the showroom... there are customers here... I couldn't even move to respond, let alone open my mouth and say something. I'm in shock.

I'M GOING TO STAB HER IN THE JUGULAR WITH AN UNSHARPENED PENCIL!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!!!

Vent over. Yes, both bosses have been informed. We'll see if anything comes out of it. I could really use a margarita... only a few more days.

  • Wow this lady sounds like a nightmare.  I would do your best to ignore her and not let her get a rise out of you.  It seems like she is trying to get some sort of attention.

You did the right thing by telling both of your bosses.  She should never be allowed to touch you and those comments are ridiculous!  Hopefully they do something about it.  In most fields, she would be written up.

  • Wow, she sounds like a complete gem. I hope you have reported each incident and inappropriate comment to her boss(es). They probably keep paperwork on complaints like that and should be talking about these things with her. If no one speaks to her about it, that is permission for her to keep acting that way. And speak up for yourself too! A simple "Please do not comment on the size of my rear" might go a long way. Then again, I don't know this woman. It might not.

Anyhow, no one should be commenting on your ass or touching your ass in the work place. It is considered harassment, even if it is from another woman.

  • Just....WOW!  Props to you.  I am generally a pretty easy going person but I'd have said something to her by now.  Most likley not an insult (the first time) but something equally snotty about her unwanted remarks.  Especially if your bosses know and haven't said anything to her about it.

At least you only have a couple more weeks before you get a break from this woman!  Breathe in....breathe out....

  • I personally would have gone snarky. A Little "I'm pregnant, so what's your excuse?" may shut her up.

  • OMG I applaud you a thousand times over for not physically harming that woman!

I used to have a female boss directly over me who was awesome at telling this hooker what's what, but she left the company about a month ago. I've noticed it getting worse since then - this broad has been written up several times for her snottiness. She's been there for so long and gets us such good business that it doesn't seem to matter. I'm really not looking forward to coming back from leave and dealing with her. I've overheard her talking other new-mom interior designers we work with and how "they've almost lost all that baby weight". I guess she sees it as a compliment, but it just comes out wrong.

My DH seems to be perfectly happy with the size of my rear. At least that's what he reassured me at lunch when I called to talk :) Gotta love him.

  • Good job not punching her in the throat, I would have been very tempted.
  • Holy crap I would not have been able to hold my tongue! I'm generally extremely passive but pregnancy rage has taken over the last few weeks. I flipped out on one of my neighbors this past weekend just because she was smoking outside the shared laundry room but had the door cracked open. I was washing LO clothes and her smoke was getting in the room so I kind of let her have it. Then started bawling when I told DH about it later. So props to you for holding it together. Hope that woman gets what's coming to her!

I agree! This! I would definitely consider her behavior harassment!

  • Let's all come together in wishing explosive diarrhea on this lady!! LMAO

Props to you though, she would have heard it back from me a while ago. I have ZERO tolerance for rude, ignorant people - pregnant or not! You're doing the right thing by reporting it, but maybe follow up with your bosses to see if they've talked to her and see what they're doing to put a stop to it. If nothing is being done currently, try talking to them about what they will do! Good luck!

  • If you've reported her officially to your management, and she is still acting this way, I'm afraid your management is made up of a bunch of cowards. If you went the casual route, no wonder nothing has been done. They're still cowards though.

Just because someone has been employed for 40 years and brings in good business does NOT warrant that kind of attitude,

There MUST be labor laws against this and you MUST file a complaint (several complaints) about both that biche and your management.

Good luck! If I were you I'm afraid I'd be in jail by now. Unless pregnancy is a good enough excuse for violence against an old broad...

Lol, this! I'm hoping for it right now. I wouldn't have dealt with anyone acting like that, pregnant or not. I would have punched someone in the throat so good for you for not hitting her!
