Parenting after a Loss

Updated: Q about Dental Issues

Update:  Turns out I developed irritation in that tooth after having the filling done so I go back in six weeks if it does not heal on its own.

Have any of you had any strange dental issues during your pregnancy and post-partum? I started having some sensitivity to heat and cold sometime in third tri. I know that it can be a symptom of pregnancy. Well, last month I went in for my annual exam and mentioned it to the hygienist. She didn't find anything. X-rays were done and nothing except a filling that had to be repaired on that side.  Well, since I had that filling repaired, it got worse! Two times I had a cracking sensation on that side while chewing food so now I don't chew on that side except for really soft foods.  The sensitivity to cold has magnified 1000%.  I went back to the dentist a week after that appointment for the filling and he couldn't find anything despite x-rays and other tests to determine where the sensitivity was coming from.  He told me to come back in two weeks, which is tomorrow, if it was not better...and it's not better.  I mentioned it to my co-workers that I was going to be out tomorrow morning for this reason and my co-worker who has a six month old said she has the exact same problem and her dentist can't find a reason!

Anyone here have this issue?

Re: Updated: Q about Dental Issues

  • My teeth were very sensitive for a few weeks after I had DS, but they are now feel g normal.

I went to the dentist about a month after having dd, for my routine visit, and I had pain, but they said everything was fine, and it went away too.

I didn't have problems during pg or pp, but a few years ago I went through a situation just like you are describing. Turns out my old filling needed to be redone, like yours, and my nerve had been exposed and agravated. The new filling just agravated it more!

Eventually, after a year of pain and a dentist who couldn't figure it out, I got a second opinion, a drill out, and a new filling again. The pain finally went away. The redrilling, to start fresh instead of just sitting on top of the agravated nerve, was the key.

  • What sort of toothpaste are you using? If you are using any kind of toothpaste with "whitening" on the claim - those are incredibly abrasive and can increase tooth sensitivity. I had to switch for a while to a non-whitening toothpaste because I couldn't drink a cup of tea or a cold drink of water without being in pain. Also if you do any whitening treatments, stop those too. Consistent flossing can help w/ tooth sensitivity as well - no idea why, but I work for an oral care company and one of our formulators told me to try that and a less abrasive toothpaste (I tried sensodyne and find it disgusting) and it really helped. Good luck!

  • I've got some serious sensitivity on the left side, and it's from my gums receding a little. Could that be it? I don't know that it's PG-related, though it did happen within the last year or so.

  • I was pretty sore after the filling procedure, it was nothing like my previous experiences. In fact the one before that was done during third trimester and I had no pain afterward. It was a different tooth.

Interesting about whitening toothpastes. I have used them for years. I recently started on Sensodyne. Of course, I got the whitening one. LOL. I will ask about that tomorrow as well.

  • I never had cavities ever until being pg.  Now I have two.  But I have never had pain or sensitivity like you are reporting.  I would definitely ask about the whitening toothpaste and if that's contributing.

  • I had increased sensitivity and also developed a little growth of extra skin on the roof of my mouth. I didn't notice it, but my dentist did. It went away so he attributed it to preg hormones. Apparently pregnancy gingivitis is also really common, too.
