Tandem nursing

How many of you tandem nurse or did tandem nurse? I want to so badly, but if I don't get pregnant within a few months, I don't think I'll get to.

If you have any great stories, experiences, or advice, please post them!

Re: Tandem nursing

  • I am expecting to tandem nurse.  DS will be 23 months when LO gets here.  We will see what happens in the next 5-6 months, but I think DS will still be nursing then.  We haven't had any real problems so far, although I am dealing with some nipple/breast pain!

  • My DDs are 18 months apart.  I tandem nursed for 6 months before weaning DD1 at age 2.  It was awesome and I will do it again starting in July.  :-)

i highly recommend reading Adventures in Tandem Nursing.  Very helpful during pregnancy and after.

  • I also recommend Adventures in Tandem Nursing. I have only experienced the pregnancy part of tandem nursing, but I have a few thoughts. I find it interesting that you want to get pregnant right now as I would be interested in tandem nursing again, but I didn't like DS being so dependent on milk during most of this pregnancy and if I were to do it again I would wait until the older nursling was at least 9 months before trying to conceive. I found nursing to be painful during the first tri. because of breast tenderness and I had to supplement because my supply dipped quite a bit despite my best efforts. Since about the halfway point in this pregnancy my supply has slowly been increasing and DS and I are enjoying nursing at this time. Being pregnant and nursing has been a lot harder than I thought it would be (even though it is quite easy right now) but definitely still worth it. Good luck!

agreed!  Your supply can take a huge dip when pregnant.  If EBF is important to you then you may want to wait until your current LO is 9 months before getting Ku again.

When DS was about 2 months old, I messed up my supply by trying to pump to get my supply up. I didn't do it right and messed it up, so he only nurses about 3 times a day, mainly for baby-mommy bonding time.

Has anyone stopped nursing completely with LO1, and then LO1 started nursing again when LO2 was born? I'll definitely check out the book rec. Thanks!

I think it would have helped me mentally during the tenderness phase if my DS was only nursing 3x a day. Maybe I should have cut him back to that! He only nurses 2x a day right now because as he has gotten older he is too squirmy most of the day to nurse. The tandem nursing book says that some LOs stop nursing during pregnancy and then start again when the milk comes in for the new baby. It also says though that some kids try to nurse again after the new baby but can't remember how to latch. I got the impression that it is one of those things that you can keep in mind, but can't count on for sure.
