membrane stripping

I'm wondering what other's opinions are about having your membranes stripped. Have you done it? Would you do it again? If you have or would consider it, at what point would you...39 weeks? 40? 41?

Also, if you had it done before your successful VBAC, how dilated and effaced were you at the time?

Re: membrane stripping

  • I had it done before my VBAC.  I didn't know my OB was doing it, but I didn't care because I was desperate for something to jumpstart my labor. I actuallly asked her about doing after the fact, and she told me she had tried. I was almost 3cm and 70% effaced at 40 weeks.

I would have it done whenever my cervix was favorable after 38 weeks.

  • I had it done with my c/s baby and it didn't do anything.

But I never had the chance to have it done with my VBAC baby.  My cervix wasn't dilated enough for my MW to get in there to do it at any of my appts.  I think that I remember that they did it a few times while I was in labor.

  • I had mine stripped w/ my attempted vbac. I was 41 weeks and 2 days. I had mild cramping all day after that and then went into labor that night. Unfortunately my vbac did not work but I did labor naturally up to 7 cm.
  • I had it done at 40 wks 3 days and it put me into labor!!

  • Generally I'm opposed to cervical checks and you can't stripe membranes without getting up in there, so I'm not inclined to consent to stripping them because 1) evidence seems generally weak 2) risk of infection and 3) labor seems more bearable when it progresses naturally so I'm not a fan of the various techniques to "get things going" even if they're natural - what's the point of exhausting yourself as you make coping with early contractions more difficult? If you exhaust yourself in the first 15 hours of labor just to "get things going" and still have another 10 hours of hard work ahead of you, aren't you setting yourself up for a really difficult pushing phase? Just my line of thinking, to give another perspective . . .

However, if I got to 41.5 weeks and still had no signs of labor, I might be desperate enough to try it. But I'd try other things that don't risk infection first.

  • I had it done last time at 39w3d but it didn't help anything. I was induced a week later - still with fingertip dilated - 50% effaced.

I don't know if my doctor will do it at all this time. They have a very strict policy for VBAC - no inductions at all include nip stim, foley, etc.
