Trouble TTC

Intro - TTC the same month of an HSG

Hi everyone! I had been on the ttc board a while ago but hadn't been back in a while. Im 29: long story short I had an ectopic pregnancy removed at 5 weeks through laparatomy 3 months ago. I still have my 2 fallopian tubes. I had an HSG yesterday and my left tube is perfect (where i had the ectopic) and the other tube is semi permeable (still could get pregnant but more difficult). My doctor told me not to try to conceive this month because of the radiation. I hadn't heard this before and was wondering if anyone had been told this by their doctor?? Opinions?? Thank you all!!

Re: Intro - TTC the same month of an HSG

  • My doctor never said anything about avoiding the cycle I did the HSG.

Nope. In fact, I did a clomid/iui the same cycle as my HSG and got pregnant.  My RE encouraged TTC after the HSG because statistics show there is a slight increase in pregnancy rates the first couple of cycles after an HSG (maybe because the dye clears out some people's tubes).

With that said, you would not want to get pregnant BEFORE your HSG.  That could be bad.  Are you having your HSG in the second half of your cycle (after O)?  If so, your doctor's advice would make sense.  But my RE was very specific that the HSG should be done between CD 6 and 10 and required a pregnancy test before the HSG.

Thanks for your reply! I already had the HSG done, yesterday. He told me after to avoid pregnancy this month. I hadn't heard of that either so that's why I wanted to see what other doctors said!

I have personally never heard of this and my RE said the opposite, but who knows - maybe something has come up in the year-and-a-half since I had mine. My LO is fine, but certainly that is just anecdotal and doesn't mean much.

  • I have not heard of that.  My doctor told me that people actually have a slightly higher chance of conceiving the cycle of an HSG because the tubes get more cleared out.  The radiation that you receive during an HSG is a relatively low amount so I wouldn't worry about it.
  • my second pregnancy was on my HSG cycle...don't think the loss had anything to do with radiation though.

Same here. The radiology tech encouraged me to have a lot of sex every other day  2 days following the test and so did my friend who is an ob. Will see what happens as I just had my hsg this cycle and am in the 2ww now.

  • The day of my HSG, my RE told us to get busy that night. He performed a sonogram the same day and say good follie growth.  So no, I have not heard of waiting a month to try. Hope that helps! :)

  • The only time I've heard of people having to TTA during their HSG cycle is if it couldn't be scheduled before they O, but nothing about radiation.

  • I've never heard this before and in fact I've heard that your chances right after an HSG are higher because the procedure opens can open any possible blockages.
