October 2011 Moms

Katie show today

I am home sick and tuned in to the Katie Couric show because I saw it was going to be on moms and the ways they cope with the stresses of motherhood. Some moms are on talking about drinking wine or taking meds like Xanax or adderall to help them deal. I'm getting annoyed though because it seems like Katie is really judging these moms and saying that they shouldn't need these things. She was mocking the mom who drinks and brought on a doctor to say too many people take these meds. Now there's a segment about adderall leading to meth addiction.

Anyone else watching? It's just rubbing me the wrong way. And by the was I do take meds for anxiety/depression...

Re: Katie show today

  • It does bother me.

I agree that people shouldn't pop a xanax every time they have a little stress in their life, but some people (like me) have real anxiety problems and don't need to be shamed for needing help.

  • I didn't see it, but I would for sure be annoyed by it.

I have days where I could definitely use a Xanax, or a bottle of wine. I think it comes with having children.
  • I didn't see the show. But that would have pissed me off completely. It's just another person standing on a bully pulpit saying women should just be inherently able to deal with all the stress of motherhood & all it comes with. I have suffered from depression in the past & because of this, my doctor & DH & I have all been very astute as to how I responded to the new stresses. The stress of losing my job has threatened to put me back there again & thankfully I've been able to cope in other ways & haven't needed any meds. The last time I was on meds, they saved my marriage.

I agree that people in general are over-medicated and some people self medicate in harmful ways - but judging new moms for doing the best they can to deal with stress is NOT the way to go. I'm glad I didn't see it. I thought more highly of her.

  • Katie, I know for a fact you had a nanny.

  • Obviously this was my interpretation of the show, but yeah I bought it sucked. She called these things "vices" and questioned everybody on the show in a way that just seemed really judgey.

One of the moms on the show was J.D. Bailey from the blog HonestMom about moms with depression/anxiety. I really love her! She was also in that Parenting magazine article last month called "Xanax makes me a better mom". The poor lady got comments on Facebook in response to the article calling her a pill head who shouldn't have had kids. Um wtf??

  • Katie annoys me. Plus she never gives away anything cool. She had a family with sextuplets on and she got them a babysitter for one night. I mean, Ellen would have given them a week vacation and a 2 full time nannies.

  • Ok one more rant - this is the description on Katie's website --

What would you do to become a ?better? mom? On this episode, hear the shocking confessions of Super-Moms. These moms are willing to do whatever it takes to be happy, skinny and sexy with ?Mommy?s Little Helper? ? the drugs they swear by!

Nobody was talking about getting skinny or sexy! Grrrr. I'm seeing in the comments on the website that some of the moms featured on the show are not thrilled with the tone of the shoe. I use to like Katie.

ETA sorry for the typos, on ipad

  • I have never liked Katie so it makes me happy that you dislike her now.

  • KC is a sellout and a joke. And after hearing about this episode, a twaat. Mental health is a huge issue in this country and SO stigmatized. And misunderstood.

Way to move the ball forward, biitch.

  • I caught some of it in the drs office today. Parts of it did rub me the wrong way for sure but some of it did have some truth in it. That one lady who eventually got addicted to meth was originally on adderol then found it not be affective anymore in making her feel like "super mom." She craved that feeling again so she went to something stronger... meth. That's what I got out of it anyway.

I took the show as, these meds are available but are being wayyy overused in today's society. I did find her to be judgey-mcjudgerson though. I didn't like that, especially towards that poor woman who lost her husband and needed something afterward to help her cope. Katie's answer was "well, I lost my husband too and didn't need anything." What?? Seriously!

The whole drinking think was odd though. Having a wine get together mid-day with your kids there then driving home buzzed or more? I found that to be very odd. I agree with wine parties with mommy friends, who doesn't like wine? But having it weekly with friends WHILE YOUR KIDS ARE THERE, then driving home with them? That's wrong IMO.

That doesn't surprise me at all. I think most celebrities have a nanny. It must be nice to get a full night's sleep every night regardless of how old their child is. Plus, if they are stressed they can just shove their kids off on the nanny. In the meantime the play "Supermom" for magazines and TV..."You can have it all because I have a fabulous career, husband, and children!" ..then they make everyone else wonder why they are not a "Supermom" and can't keep up like Katie can. Screw them!

  • I'm really glad I didn't see this show.  Just reading about it makes me mad. If someone hasn't had postpartum issues, I don't think they should be able to judge those of us who have.  I had quite a bit of postpartum anxiety when my DD was born and a low dose of Celexa made all the difference.  Quite frankly, KC can judge me all she wants, but I think what would actually make a difference is more of an open dialogue about postpartum issues as well as parenting being hard sometimes.

  • I can't flucking stand KC. I'm glad I didn't see this. I'm piissed just reading about it. I had some serious anxiety issues for a full year before I started taking Zoloft. Honestly, the stigma behind admitting that I was struggling kept me from filling the prescription. I'm ashamed that I waited so long. Those meds have made all the difference. I'm a better wife and mother and employee and just overall person for them. I feel like ME again.
