EBF

Not that it matters for anything, but just curious as to what people mean when using the term EBF. I know that it stands for exclusively breastfed, but does it mean that LO has only ever had breastmilk or does it mean that LO doesn't ever take a bottle, not even a pumped one? Once LO starts having some solid foods, are they no longer EBF, even if still BFing?

Re: EBF

  • She has more pumped bottles than nurses and I still say I EBF. We just started solids... But I would still say I EBF until I wean.

  • Agreed, but I would not say EBF once solids are introduced. Pumped milk is still EBF in my book.

I am pretty sure EBF means that they never get formula. Giving them a bottle of BM or eating solid foods still qualifies them as EBF.

This is how I use the term, too.

  • I think everyone has their own take on it.
For me, it's that the baby gets lots more BM than formula. As an example, while in the hospital, DS got 2oz of formula to clear out the jaundice. But all other food up until this point has just been BM, either delivered via bottle or on tap. So, I call him EBF.

Once solids are a part of his diet, then I'll change it to "DS is BF", rather than "DS is EBF".

Once he's a toddler: "DS still nurses".

  • EBF is exclusively breastfed. Once a baby is taking in solids or anything besides breast milk, he or she is no longer EBF. It doesn't matter where the breast milk is coming from, though - breast or bottle.

That is how I think of it too.

  • I ebf. I also EP. To me, it means he gets breastmilk only.

  • As long as she's getting only BM and not formula or wcm, she is ebm IMO. I'm working way too hard to get disqualified for bottles.
