Babies: 9 - 12 Months

transitioning from purees to finger foods or BLW

My son is still eating purees, but the last two weeks I've offered him finger foods, and, have tried offering him food in the BLW style (long strips) as well.  He seems to do better with the BLW style (he's mastered holding a half a banana and going to town for example).  His pincher grasp isn't quite there yet, so the finger foods are hit or miss.

I want to start BLW since he seems to do better with that BUT he's in daycare and they aren't on board with it, only finger foods.  So I assume to be consistent I should just do the finger food approach?  Or, has anyone successfully done finger foods at daycare and BLW at home?

Also, for those of you that did purees first and then transitioned to finger foods or BLW, how did you do that? Slowly "wean" off purees and add more food?  Or, just stop purees cold turkey?  I am also wondering with daycare...we send purees with his bottles, but once he starts finger foods they offer that.  Should I send purees so he isn't hungry, just while he's continuning to learn finger foods?

Any thoughts or advice would be great! Thanks!

Re: transitioning from purees to finger foods or BLW

  • Over the past month I've been adding more and more finger foods. The way I've done this is basically started giving him little bits of whatever I'm having. Anything from bagel w/cream cheese, mac-n-cheese, small bits of meat anf fish, tiny pieces of fruits and veggies, to pasta. He's doing great with everything. He still really likes his purees as well though, so I wouldn't really say we are transitioning away from that yet, just adding new things along with it. I think it helps them get a wider range of complete nutrition when you do both together, and also keeps things interesting for them as they have a variety of textures.

  • We never did purees, just BLW so I can't speak to the weaning process. But my LO is in daycare with some rules about what they will and won't feed infants.

One of the rules is that they won't feed table food before 8 months, only purees (after 4 months). What we did was to feed LO table foods in long strips and the like at home until 8 months and at daycare LO only got bottles until he was 8 months old. Once he was 8 months old, we told DC that he could have any of the table food there. By that point, LO was pretty adept at eating and feeding himself, so I didn't really worry about the fact that at daycare his food is cut up into smaller pieces as he could still get it to his mouth, eat it and not gag.

So now LO gets food cut into smaller bits at daycare and at home we just feed him whatever we're eating, cut if needed. He even gets purees at Daycare sometimes (applesauce), and while it doesn't seem to confuse him any, I've been told he doesn't particularly like being spoon fed and likes to grab the spoon. I figure that's their problem as at home he does just fine feeding himself.

I'm not familiar with BLW, but we did finger foods when she was 10 months because the daycare people told us she should be eating table foods by this age.  She also started trying to grab food off our plate and stared at us when we ate so we decided she was ready.  She had a problem with the gagging and I was terrified of her choking which is why we probably waited so long. Turned out everyone was right, she doesn't have any teeth but it doesn't stop her from eating her food and once she got the hang of it, we had very few problems.  Some foods it took her longer to figure out than others.

At first, I let daycare give her finger foods and we still did purees at home.    After they had given her something, I gave DD the same food at home, cut up the way they did it.  She never had any problems going between the two.  There was some faces from the new texture, but she is a good eater so she dug right in.  I still steam the veggies and some fruits, but I don't mash them up, just cut them up into pieces.  Occasionally I still give her some purees, usually prunes if she seems constipated or fruits mixed with her baby cereal, but we try to let her eat what we eat.  She didn't seem to have any problems, so maybe you can do BLW at home and finger foods at daycare.  When she gets the hang of finger food, offer that to her at home.

Our daycare provides the purees if you were fine with the brand they bought, so they had some there if she couldn't handle the lunch.  It probably wouldn't hurt to send some pureed food, but I can't see them letting a child starve.  They would probably offer him a food that he can eat well.  Maybe you could check with them and come up with a plan.

It stinks when a daycare doesn't support your feeding style.  Good Luck!

  • It has been a slow transition for my DD.  DS went quickly to finger foods.  He was good at eating and wanted to do it.  DD gets a little worked up and while she is getting better at feeding herself, I am not confident that she eats enough herself so we "fill in the gaps" with some puree after she has been offered finger foods.  So for daycare lunch, she gets finger foods and some puree that the teacher uses if she thinks DD needs more to eat.  This is also what we do for dinner but we rarely use purees at night because she is doing a pretty good job at feeding herself.

Sometimes it is frustrating how slow she has been moving to all table food.  Especially because DS was so easy.  But she has been doing all things on her own schedule and she has been making progress.  The best advice I have is to just keep offering new things as often as you can.  DD started better with the longer strips like you mentioned too but her pincher skills followed shortly after.  Just keep offering it.

  • I still do a puree with some sort of finger food every night for him to get better with textures. So if I do say pureed sweet potatoes I will do green beens or chicken. And it's been working well so far. As far as the daycare goes I have no idea what to do. Ours cooks for all the kids but since ours was still on purees I haven't asked them to try and feed him but I figured he spends all his time with the other kids during the day it makes sense for them to try and feed him finger foods as well since he is watching the other kids eat at the same time. I swear that makes a world of a difference having them see you eat at the same time.

I'm doing this same thing with my DS.  Seems to be working out well.  I send peas, carrots & sweet potatoes (cut into tiny pieces) to daycare, along w/ his purees.

  • We did a mix of everything. First it was the puffs, so then we did more that was puff-like. We then went to sweet potatoes and regular potatoes that are just thicker versions of what he was eating, mashed up stuff. Then we went to whatever worked best for the food. Waffles were in strips, but pancakes were bite sized. We just went with the flow, whatever seemed like it would work for that food is what we did. We are introducing new things at daycare, during snacktime. She is getting her regular meals, but then her snacks are blueberries, or steamed veggies, etc. because if it doesn't go well, it's not like she's missing a whole meal. Once we knew she did well with it, we would incorporate it. Her breakfast is usually something like oatmeal, waffle, or pancake with a half of a banana, or yogurt. (IE: big kid food) then lunch and dinner are purees, because the snack in between is a new thing.
