Preemies

Formula question

Hi all. Im a lurker. My daughter was born at 36w6d so they consider her a preemie. I was wondering if anyone has any experience or advice with formula. We were on similac advance from the hospital but once we got home it made her so gassy and she was legit in pain and passing a lot of gas. We went back to the pedi who gave us Gerber Sensitive powder to try. So we started that and didnt see much of a difference. She is still gassy and is now getting really fussy at night and wanting to eat every 2 hours. But during the day she is fine. We are up to just under 3.5oz and are slowly giving her 3.5. Did anyone use the powder this young? Do you think that is the reason? Would you switch formuals all together or try to ready to feed instead? We are going to the pedi tonight for a second opinion since they said the gerber should have eliminated her gas and stuff but it hasn't. Any advice is greatly appreciated! TIA

Re: Formula question

  • Babies are very gassy creatures. It really sucks. I would ask the pedi about gas drops and a probiotic. Neither helped us but I know they have helped some people. The only thing else I could suggest is trying a formula that is not milk based to see if its a potential allergy. But if gas is the only symptom I doubt that's the issue.

Thank you for the advice! I will ask the pedi. I feel like the amount of gas is not "normal" and she seems to be in some discomfort from it. I will also ask about the formula but somehow doubt that is it since she is fine all day long. Babies are interesting creatures :)

  • Both my girls pretty much used Gerber Sensitive powder from about a month onward along with BM until my supply tanked and we switched to all formula. My oldest was very gassy and we used all kinds of methods to get the gas out. How long has she been on Gerber Sensitive? I would give it at least two weeks before making the switch. Have you thought about changing her bottle? I had really good luck with Dr. Brown bottles (pain in the butt to clean, but totally worth it in my book).

We have been on it for almost two weeks. I wanted to make one change at a time to know which one was helping. I am using Avent bottles now and she has no problem with them. I do have Dr. Browns too and was waiting to see if she improved from the formula and if not then maybe change the bottle. Thanks for the advice!!!

  • My lo was on similac advance but was having a lot of gas so we switched him to similac sensitive. That helped him. And we never switched to powder. He's still drinking the premixed.
