just wondered what anyone has tried in the past to induce labor on their own....i am meaning full term mums, and nothing unsafe please lol! just interested as to what people think has worked for them
I went for a 2 mile walk the night before my daughter was born. I'm not sure if that played any role in her coming out when she did, but when I get closer and want this baby out, that is absolutely something I will be trying again.
your body will start labor when it's ready - nothing is proven to start labor unless your body was already on its way to doing so. In order to understand how labor starts, you need to understand that it's all brought on by the just the right amount of hormones - progesterone (this lowers when labor is ready) and oxytocin (this rises) and either contractions start or your water breaks. That's the recipe to getting labor to start.
Once you are in early labor, you need to remember to rest as much as you can. If your adrenaline goes up , it will fight with the progesterone and adrenaline will win everytime - it basically stops progesterone from lowering, which stalls labor.
So just stay in a relaxed state (this is why so many women go into labor at night because they are more relaxed), do some walking to help baby shift lower, bring in oxygen to your muscles... but there is nothing you can really DO to make labor happen.
If you've heard of "cervidel" (what hospitals insert to try and induce labor, it's a gel-like substance) -- you can actually find it naturally in semen, which is why they say to have sex - semen in the vagina and having orgasms can help contractions, but again, your body needs to be in line for that to happen.

So I worked in a flower shop for 3 years and TONS of people swear by Gladiolus flowers! A lot of men come in and say, "just waiting for my wife to give birth to our baby". It is strange but I have seen many of these cases.
ate an entire pineapple, drank 1/2 bottle of castor oil, drank crap loads of raspberry leaf tea, curb walked, ate spicy food, ate chicken parm, sex sex and more sex, walked and walked and walked
ended up being induced at 41w1d and she still didnt want to come out.
GL!

Do they eat the flower? Or just sit next to it? Just curious, I've never heard that before. Lol.

I've heard chiropractors can do an adjustment to get things rolling, or a prenatal massage and they can hit a certain spot in the leg to stimulate things, the same point they need to avoid throughout the rest of the pregnancy..but who knows, I don't really believe in anything and just think when baby is ready, they will come.

With DD, I bobbed around on a yoga ball, did a shot of castor oil, walked curbs (one foot on the sidewalk, the other lowered on the street and then proceed to walk) and ate spicy food. Try sex of course too. DD, was born 2 hours after her EDD. Who knows if any of those things were the instigator to jumpstart anything...no one can ever really know but it doesn't hurt to try.

I'm lurking from 1st trimester, but during my last pregnancy I used Evening Primrose Oil, walked a few miles, did accupressure, and nipple stimulation. I went into labor a few days early so I guess it worked :P
ate an entire pineapple, drank 1/2 bottle of castor oil, drank crap loads of raspberry leaf tea, curb walked, ate spicy food, ate chicken parm, sex sex and more sex, walked and walked and walked
ended up being induced at 41w1d and she still didnt want to come out.

My experience with my first child was similar. Ate spicy foods, pizza, & pineapple, drank the raspberry tea, walked as much as I could (with hugely swollen feet), had sex a few times a day. And my son was also born at 41w1d and didn't want to come out.
Son #1 is already 2!
Not too much longer until Son No.2 arrives!
When I get to the end, I will take EPO, walk, sex and do nipple stimulation. I went a week over last time and you bet I'll do some random things to see if it will help get things going earlier this time.
With DD's birth, I think that a lot of nipple stimulation, orgasms and sex probably helped. I did this a day or 2 before her due date because the dr was threatening to induce a couple days after the EDD to my GD (I wanted to go natural). We also went for a long walk that day. My doula was going to have me try accupressure if I didn't go into labor, but DD ended up coming on her due date.
My suggestions: have sex, get a nice long spa pedicure, go for a walk. It will also help you relax and you can have pretty toes when you go into labor.
I haven't "tried" anything yet as I'm only 35 weeks, but once I get really close to my due date, I do plan to try LOTS of walking. My OB also mentioned sex, but I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to get into it at this point haha.

Research shows that the surfactant that a baby's lungs produce may help trigger labor - the baby is ready to breathe, and labor begins. No matter how uncomfortable it gets, in most cases it is best to just let the onset of labor happen naturally, and aside from some anecdotal claims, there really isn't much you can do but wait. "40 weeks" is not a number set in stone, it's based on an average. For 99% of women, the baby will show up when the baby is ready.
