Q for those who had their AMH tested

If you had your AMH tested and have seen the actual results, what lab was your test sent to?  This info should be on your test results.

I was looking at my AMH results (both from the first time and second time) and noticed mine were sent to two different places.  The first time I had it tested (and it came back at 0.54) it was through a Quest Lab and the actual test was sent off to a lab in Irving, Texas.  I live in Houston, TX and Irving is a suburb just north of Dallas...so it was not too long of a trip.

My most recent result (< 0.16 which is undetectable on that lab's scale) was through LabCorp and they sent it off to a lab in California.

I am wondering if the two labs could use different assays or even if the fact that one had to be sent off to CA could have affected the results.  My DH (who is a physician) insists that the AMH test is very temperature sensitive and I wonder how closely these things are monitored for temp when they are being sent across country...I mean, this was a $57 test and the FSH test they did in house at their own lab was $42. I can't imagine that for an extra $15 they are shipping it under closely monitored conditions.

Maybe I am just deluding myself, but I am just flabergasted that in a matter of like 6 or so menstrual cycles (the rest of the time I was pregnant or not having a period because I had just given birth and, therefore, one would think that I would not be loosing eggs) my AMH would take such a nose dive.  And that it would be so low when my FSH is showing as normal.  And that it would be so low when I was able to concieve through "just" clomid/IUI a little over a year ago.  Don't get me wrong - I know I have a fertility problem -- I basically have DNA evidence to prove it (i.e. I'm a fragile x premutaiton carrier).  I am not that naive or delusional to think I don't have a problem.  However, the results of this test are pretty much telling me (if I believe them) that I don't have any eggs left and I find that a little hard to believe.

Re: Q for those who had their AMH tested

  • I know that my RE (CCRM) will only use their lab for some tests including AMH. They told me that they've found really skewed results from other labs and this is one test in particular that they can't rely on other labs for their results. I don't have any personal information since my first RE didn't test my AMH. When I had it done at CCRM it was on the low side (just under 1), especially given that I'm only in my mid-20s. With such a huge jump I would really push to get it retested. Is there a closer lab you could use?

I don't know. The two main lab groups around here are LabCorp and Quest. The first one was done at the lab used by Houston IVF (which incidentally is somehow affiliated with CCRM) - the blood was drawn in their office and sent off to a lab in Irving, TX. It was a "quest" lab and the lab is literally located in the Houston IVF offices. The second lab was done at a LabCorp lab. It is not literally located inside an RE's office, but it literally right next door to one. This was the one sent off to California. My best guess is that there is not a lab in Houston that does the AMH test on site...although, I guess I could try to look into this. If there is one, it must be an independent lab and not one affiliated with either Quest or LabCorp. In both cases, they did the FSH and other labs on site but sent off the AMH.

  • In that case I'd go back to Quest. I don't think it's particularly expensive and it's worth it to get a second test done imo. CCRM uses a local lab company for their testing. The only thing they sent out was the DNA fragmentation testing on DH's sperm. I've seen their medical courier go into the office with a freezer or fridge on wheels. I think there's less chance for error just going somewhere else in Texas than going all the way to CA.
  • Mine was sent to CA as well, both times ... all the way from Wisconsin.  I didn't know the test was sensitive to temperature.  That is interesting.

"The AMH test is very temperature sensitive and therefore a break in this temperature chain may lead to an inappropriate result." this is from fertile care dot org. This article states that when stored at room temperatures for several days that AMH levels can actually increase: https://www.iffs-uit.com/uploads/article_pdf/1s2.0s147264831200689xmain.pdf I don't know what would happen if they were stored warmer than room temperature. I also don't know what the effect would be if it was stored too cold. The study does not seem to indicate that. The study also did not indicate what would happen if the blood was improperly handled. I don't know what to think. I do think I may have it redrawn, though. It just does not make sense to me to get such a bad reading (literally under the lowest level they report on their scale) when I just had a baby six months ago. I also know this test isn't FDA approved so maybe I am putting too much stock in it altogether. As an aside, with respect to the normal fsh and low amh, I have heard or read that that could indicate a recruitment problem as opposed to a true "dimminished ovarian reserve" but I don't know if that is just a theory or there is any data to back that up.

  • I just read this on a website that gives instructions regarding the AMH test to those conducting the test:

"It is very important we receive the blood within 72 hours of collection. Specimen integrity becomes questionable after this time period which may result in rejection of the specimen."

Hmmm....I'm wondering if my blood made it all the way from Texas to California and was tested in under 72 hours.  I'm thinking not...

  • Hm ... well, mine definitely didn't make it out to CA from WI in 72 hours that's for sure.
