Agree, and it seems that the ones who are so quick to be critical, have kids with REALLY bad names... We have out names picked and I am afraid to go there and ask opinions LOL

I'm guily of hanging out over there at times, only because I have no idea what I will name this baby!
I do completely agree that most posts are the most hideous names. I sometimes think? This is gotta be a joke, right? Unfortunately I think some of the ladies are not joking.
I fall in the lines of if I don't like a name, I just move on. I don't rant on about it. I think the problem is they are so repetitive and it gets old fast.

I just saw the ones you posted, I like them. Now some of the other ones in that thread are the reason I posted this.
You need a ticker, BTW!
I DONT know how LOL I have tried and has been an epic failure every time

Oh I am gender switching a name all up if we have another girl...and they can suck it. Can't use it for a boy, since there is one living still, but want to honor DH's grandfather who was his favorite person ever. Suck it Baby Names.
Yea, there are some awful names and the regulars can be brutal - but sometimes it's called for. Though, I don't know if it changes anyone's minds. I think their basic "code" of sorts is good - don't add extra letters or try to make the spelling unique, use real names, watch the trends if you don't want a popular name, no last names for first names and no "gender-switching" for names.
Since I like classic names mostly, I usually agree with them. Some of them are better about saying things aren't their style than others.
My favorite poster is the one who has all the Name Board stuff in her sig and she has picked this HORRIBLE name for her child. Of course, that's just my opinion...which is name board code for suck it.
I'm also a name-judger (lol)! If you put your baby name out there for others to judge, what do you expect? Anyway, who cares what some stranger thinks of your baby name anyhow? I love my kid's name and it fits him, what else matters, you know?
I've seen some really terrible names lately. When we were trying to pick a name (middle name especially) for DD I was lurking over there quite a bit and it was super unhelpful because 90% of the names I saw were gagful.
I dont get the appeal of being a regular over there... I mean all day long seeing names and posting about names would make me no fun and I would have to have no life IRL to be able to have all that free time.. Just weird to me!
Some people are really into onomatology <-- the study of names, so it's kind of a hobby to many. I'm actually interested in it. I used to post on a baby name board way back in the 90's on AOL (wow, that makes me feel ancient) and we're all on a FB group now. Names have always been an interest of mine. I don't really participate on the one here, though, because I already have a group I've been in for ages. But I love me some name discussing.
It makes me feel odd to watch that group go through phases to. Like the name that are loved on that board were NOT loved three years ago. It's like you can watch the trends move just by reading the threads.

They are very into classic names over there. I tend to like uncommon but real names. Does always fly over well there. We have possibly Fletcher, Landon, and Abraham picked out for a boy. For girls we have Hadley, Nora, Quinnlyn, and Libby. We find out gender in 2 weeks.
Particularly because NOBODY likes my boys' names. But, that doesn't stop me. They have names that are distinctly masculine, spelled correctly and aren't in the top 10. We have really simple naming criteria.
I like a good train wreck post, too.
Bottom line about the boy names on girls is this: Own it. You want to give a girl a typically masculine name? Fine. That's your style. But, don't defend yourself by saying that you heard so and so celebrity used it on their daughter, or I've known 5 adult women with this name. That doesn't change the history or the root of the name. That just makes it your naming style. I'm OK with that (unless, of course, it's one of my boys' names ;P).
These ^ are general "yous," not you specifically, Kate or Arne.

I disagree. There is no hard and fast rule to what "they" love. Look at the regulars' siggies. Their kids aren't typically rocking Theodore, Elizabeth and Catherine. Seriously. As a general rule, a classic name is going to get a thumbs up because they appeal to a vast majority of people that's what makes them classic -- look at their popularity over the years. They trend highly across generations because of their appeal, not because only a few people from the BNB like them. KWIM?
And, with the exception of Fletcher your choices aren't that uncommon... Landon: 34; Abraham: 192. Hadley: 178; Nora: 137; Quinnlyn (the only one I can find is Quinlan but it's masculine, so I don't know where you got this one); Libby (nn for Elizabeth): which is #11.

What's the name?
Elliott, her full name would be Anne Elliott LastName and we would call her a double name. I own it 100% and couldn't give two shits if somebody doesn't like it. It sounds great with our last name, Elliott is both my GFIL and BILs name and DD has a double name as well. Suck it, BNB!

Elliot is higher on the girls name list than the boys name list. They're both in the 100's, but its more popular for a girl than it is a boy right now.

Elliott
Elliot on a girl? Never heard of that! Will you NN her Ellie? Or just Elliot?
First off, you're spelling it wrong. Two L's and two T's. Second, I edited my original post to add the full name. It would be Anne Elliott as a double name probably. Ellie could be a NN but that is VERY close to DD's name.
Kate - I will say, w/ your edit, the double name & the family meaning, I think it's lovely. I'm not crazy about Elliott as a first name for a girl, but I like what you are going for.
Not that it matters what anyone else thinks. Speaking of which, I have my own name question but am debating a SO or keeping it here.
Well thanks! I love it. My mom will hate it because it's not from our family. LOL DD's name is completely from my side. Only far that that another one comes from DHs

Does this mean your hypothetical's child's pro list is getting longer than the con list? )

I think my parents were surprised about DD2's name, both names come from DH's grandmas. DD1's name is all from my mom's side, so it was kind of funny to me. We don't share names at all w/ family & friends before, so I never hear the stuff they really think since they won't say it after they see the baby.
Is Ellie's full name Ellie or is it short for something? DD is Lillie, so I'm not sure we would ever go for the nn of Ellie, though I like it.

Ellie is an Eleanor. We thought we'd call her both names interchangeably, but it's more like 80% Ellie.
I do agree that Ellie & Lillie are super close, but I have heard worse - like I think Ellie & Elise or Lillie and Lila would be worse. If you really wanted a nickname you could nn Anne - I know a little girl Anna who goes by Annie. Not shorter, but a fun kid name.
There is actually already an Anne OurLastName in our neighborhood! LOL And our last name is NOT common. It's crazy! There are about 15 of us with the same last name...all of them are related and then the 4 of us in my family {FIL plus our 3} We all go to the same church though.

FWIW the Baby Names people are usually fine with masculine middle names with family significance on a girl, especially paired with a classic, feminine first name. Middle names are fair game for pretty much anything. Which is, I'm reasonably sure the only reason they haven't run me off the board yet...
Although they might side eye the spelling and the double name vs. FN MN
Oh they HATE the use of Elliott for a girl. Of course, half of them have named their kids the dumbest names ever, so I don't really care. I rather name my child a "boy" name than Luna. Double names are very normal here.
Oh and what's wrong with the spelling? That's the right way to spell it!

I saw a pretty bad one the other day in a friends baby announcement E mail...
They named their daughter Keaton.... Family Ties much?

The general consensus over there is a strong hate for boy/unisex names for girls.
I like to fuel the fire and post my love for them.
Did it work?

I posted a poll over there when I had my boy's name narrowed to two choices. I actually named him the losing name.
