What age are you thinking of sending your LO to preschool? I have been thinking age 3, but the grandmas are all suggesting he should get into something at age 2.
Around here, anything under the age of 3 is considered day care. Preschool age is around 3 to 4 years old. I think three is a good age. Anything earlier would be more for socialization rather than learning, in my opinion. Unless it is needed for working parents or stay at home parents that need time to run errands or whatever. So,I guess it depends on your goal in sending your LO.

E started at 2 1/2, he went from 9 to 3 twice a week. The actual preschool was from 9 to noon but they ate lunch, played outside and napped then they tried to get them to go potty. I paid for the whole day whether he stayed or not so I didn't see the point of picking him up to take him home to nap. The day care was open from 6 to 6 but preschool was from 9 to 12. He went to 5 day pre K at 4 from 8 to 11. I'm debating doing 2 day preschool this fall or waiting until next fall for 5 day preK 3. We don't have the option of free school before K here.
Preschool here starts at 2. Unfortunately, Li misses the cut off by 1 day (it's Oct 1), so we will be doing Toddler Time mommy and me in September, she will start and older 2's drop off program, that is for all the kids born Oct-Dec, in January. She officially starts 2 year old nursery school Sept 2014.
This is going to sound incredibly slacker-ish of me, but I hadn't even begun to think of preschool yet. Now that it's been brought up, it makes sense to at least have a few places in mind to look at within the next year or so.
Not to take over this post, but Liz, how did find information about the program(s) you mentioned? Is it all online and I just have to google? Or did you just ask friends/family who already had kids enrolled?
Sorry Amy for hijacking your post.. but you got me thinking now!
All of the preschools around here start at 3, so he won't be going until then. I am hoping to find a daycare that will take him for 1 day a week when he's 2 just to get more socialization for him.
DS goes to an early learning center so they transition from daycare into preschool in the same center. I think we will probably just keep him there as long as we are in the area. I am not sure how old the kids are before they start in the preschool class...maybe 3??
I have all of 2 choices in my town. One of them is at a church, so that's out for us. So basically, I have one option unless I want to take her out of town. I don't think we'll start at 2.

This is close to what C will do as well. She attends daycare at the university my H works at and we have 3 options once she ages out of daycare between 2 1/2 and 3 - Early Childhood Education Center, Children's Center or Preschool.

This. I've noticed since DD moved from the infant room to the toddler room, her vocabulary and social skills have improved a lot. So while a lot of people still consider it daycare, I'm in the camp that feels it's a little bit of school, too.

Same for usexcept it will be 'nanny and me.' DD will go to a local temple most likely.

Li is going to go to pre-school at our temple and we do the Toddler Time mommy and me (it's like a pre-preschool) and another music class there. When I signed up, I was talking to the pre-school director and she explained everything to me. You could probably google and find when the class cut-off is in your state. I know NY is still Dec and NJ is Oct 1. So, depending on what the cut off is, that would be whether they start pre-school in Sept or have to wait another year.

Maybe you have already looked into this, but is the one at the church actually associated with the church, or is the church just the building that they happen to use? A relative of mine went to preschool located in the basement of a church, but it wasn't at all religious. Obviously that isn't going to be the case with all of them at a church, but I just thought I would throw that out there if you haven't already looked into that, in case your other option sucks or whatever.
ETA: In answer to the OP, around here preschool is just the grade level before kindergarden, though there are starting to be a few that offer another year before that. We are not going to send LO extra early because he gets lots of socialization through activities and I know that I provide a learning environment at home for him.
It's kind of the downfall to a small area that choices are limited for child care, activities, and education. There is a decent day care that transitions well to pre-k, but it's in another town. I'm weighing my options whether to just drive her there or not. I have several friends who will be taking their kids to the one out of town, so it's likely that will be a big option. I just don't like to travel, when I know there is an option just a couple blocks away.

No problem! I don't know much either!
