BTDT Moms Labor and exercise?

Not sure if this has been asked before but here it goes.

How many of you were religous about exercise and working out during your pregnancy and how was your labor experience? (on time with EDD, easier delivery etct?)

I have had heard from so many people that it leads to an easier delivery but I am curious about your experiences.

 TIA :)

Re: BTDT Moms Labor and exercise?

  • I don't formally exercise but I'm pretty active in general (I hike, ride bikes, and walk a lot).  My kid was born 2 1/2 weeks early and labor was easy.

  • I have never exercised while pregnant. First baby- Induced at 40w 1d, 6 hours of labor, 5 min of pushing, no epi. Second baby- Went into labor at 40w 3d, 4 hours of labor, 1 push, no epi.
  • I am lazy as sin, I barely ever exercised when I was pregnant with M aside from taking regular little walks near the end but my labor was smooth and easy, delivery was quick and simple and M was on time.

  • With DS I exercised three or four times a week. I did low impact cardio and also a weight training program that a trainer certified in prenatal training put together for me. My labor wasn't that bad, but I pushed for one hour and 40 minutes. It was brutal, and DS was all bruised when he came out. :( So in my case it wasn't true.

  • I didn't exercise much at all when I was pregnant with M.  I was tired and lazy and on light duty for over half the pregnancy.

I took walks several times a week, especially when the weather was nice, but that's about it.  That said, my delivery was not bad at all. I was laboring with regular consistent contractions for several days, which really sucked...but I only pushed for about 30-40 minutes, tops.

  • I ran until 31 weeks during my first pregnancy, did three triathlons a half marathon and a ton of shorter races.  Of course I didn't really race, but I was very active.

When I had my son my doctor told me the opposite of what I had heard and actually told me that sometimes when you are in really good shape you fight labor and your muscles aren't able to relax and so you are actually working against labor.  Not sure exactly how true that was but he said he finds body builders (not that I am or was a body builder) are the worse laborers.

I tried an epi free birth and I was just never able to relax enough. I pushed for multiple hours with no progress, but once given the epi was able to push my son out less then 30 minutes after the epi was in place.

This time I'm trying the lazy approach so we'll see how my labor compares.

  • I didn't go to the gym but walked almost daily, at least 2 or 3 miles when I was pregnant, until my back went out about a month before my due date, I was very nervous about staying in shape, the day before I went into labor my back got better and I was able to walk around the block, long story short, I had a quick relatively easy med free birth.
