How long does it take you ladies to pump? I'm mostly thinking of it since I'm hooked up and I reeeeally want to get to bed, but it seems to take forever to empty them fully. Right now, I've gotten about 4 oz out of one and less from the one she recently nursed on, but I've also been here like 20 minutes. Is there anyway to speed up the process?
Re: Pumping faster?
I pump 20 minutes every time I pump (during the week, 3x/day, on the weekend just 1x/day). Like PP said, sometimes massage/compressions help speed things up. I also try to hit the letdown button halfway through, and normally have a second letdown sometime around the 15 minute mark.
I will say that I was told to pump "20 minutes or 5 minutes until after the flow stops" - but I don't do that second part. Sometimes the flow is still dribbling a drop here and there, but I feel like it would do that all day! And when I'm at work, we aren't allowed to take more than 30 minutes in the pump room because there are so many working mamas who need to use it (so 20 min pumping and 5 minutes to set up, 5 minutes to take down). So I've just stuck with 20 across the board.
I don't know that there's any way to speed up the process... Turning the pump up may help a little, but obviously you don't want to be in pain! But I totally get why you're asking - I wish it would go faster too!
It takes me a reallllly long time if I haven't had a good let-down. If I'm having trouble, I'll get LO to nurse on the other side at the same time as I pump the other. Not his favorite thing, but it only takes a second. For some reason, I don't have trouble letting down when I'm at work-- probably because of how long I have to go without nursing.
If I get 4 oz in a day (above what he nurses), I am psyched. I only work 2 days/week though. If I can leave him with 8-9 oz for the hours that I'm gone, I am not worried. I have some more stored in the freezer if he's hungrier than that.
