Dropping to two naps?

When did you do this, and how did you know it was time?  Also, how did you adjust the other two naps (if at all?).  DS has been having a harder time going down at night, and getting up even earlier in the morning.  It was suggested we drop his third nap (which is usually only 30 minutes or so anyway, but seemed to help get him through to bedtime).  Any tips/suggestions/thoughts?  TIA!

We dropped when ds started fighting the 3rd one and then adjusted his 1st nap to 2.5 hours after he woke up and the second one is sometimes 2.5 sometimes 3 hours after he woke up from the first. He started waking up earlier so I thought he was sleeping too much and asked the doc and they said that wasn't the case if he was napping then he probably needed the sleep

DS dropped it on his own at about 7 months.  He used to take naps every two hours of being awake and then all of sudden went to 3 hours in between.  Those first 2 weeks were a little rough, as he would be extra cranky at night but it wasn't logical to let him take a nap at 6:00 at night so I had to struggle to keep him up until 7:00 for his bedtime routine.

I stressed about it for a little and told my mom and MIL (who watch him) to try their hardest to keep him until until a certain time and then i finally stopped stressing and figured he would adjust on his own, and he did.  Now he takes a nap at 10:00a and 2:00p and bedtime routine is starting between 7 and 7:30.  There are still random days where he'll take a 3rd nap, but that's rare now.

I'm having a similar issue. My DS is waking up around 6 am, so he's already taking his first nap at 8, then another at 11, then another at 2. Then we just hope and pray he hangs I'm there until the 7 pm bedtime routine. Suggestions?

We just did it this week. DS was fighting me like hell to take his middle of the day nap. He gets up at 6am and used to nap at 8am, 11am, and 1/2pm with a bedtime of 6pm. Last week, he would just scream for an hour at his 11am nap, I'd get him up, and he'd nap at his 1pm nap. So, I just cut his middle nap out.

Now, he gets up between 6-7am, goes down for his first nap between 9-10am, then another nap around 1-2pm, bedtime at 6pm. It took him a few days to adjust (he'd only sleep 30 minutes, wake up tired, etc.), but now he has the hang of it and takes two 1-1.5 hour naps.

In our house I set bed time, but DD picks nap time. She dropped her 4th nap around 4 months, and the 3rd at 5 months. She now takes a mid-morning nap and and "after lunch" nap.

It took her a while to get past the 30-45 minute nap period during the transition to the new napping routine. My only advice is to really stick to bed time routine. Sometimes having a tired baby at night (even keeping baby up till bed time) can help them establish good napping habits, in my experience.
