Food Allergy

Testing for an allergy

Is there any way to test LO for a food allergy while still BF.  MH is allergic to strawberries and melons and I've avoided them since my delivery.  LO already has Milk protein allergy and I've had to stop eating dairy.  I'm worried that she might have inherited his allergy.  I don't want to eat those items and have her suffer a major anaphylaxis.  Would that happen or would my immunities protect her from that while BFing?

  • I don't know the answer to your question exactly but I'm thinking if your immunity didn't keep her from having the milk protein allergy then it won't protect her against any others. I'm also thinking its possible she can have food allergies to anything, not just melon and strawberries because that's what your husband specifically has. I have heard that you can test a food of the under side of their forearm and if their skin reacts to the food it's an indicator of allergy. I'm not sure the validity of that and if age is a factor. My DD has a few allergies, I recently put a tiny drop of cow milk on her arm and she got hives on that spot. So I assume her allergy is still there. Visit a pediatric allergist and find out how soon they'll do the RAST test. GL!

  • How did you get a diagnosis for the milk protein allergy?  I know my LO has a milk soy protein intolerance, and it's not classified as an allergy but rather an intolerance, he doesn't have "allergic" reactions but develops a rash, gas, and GI upset if he eats dairy and soy.  We took him to an allergist and they did a blood and prick test, both came out negative.  Allergy testing in LOs can be controversial only because sometimes they're too young to test and/or the results may give false positive results.  I felt better about testing him though, have you consulted with an allergist?

You could ask your doctor about eating mellons and strawberries yourself since you're BFing, instead of giving it to your LO directly?   Good luck!
