Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Signs to stop swaddling besides rolling?

LO just turned 3 months old, and has been waking up 3 to 5 times per night since Thursday. She's also become VERY hard to get to sleep at bedtime. I know many of you deal with this constantly, but she was sleeping 12 hours at night with 1 feed less than a week ago... I'm thinking growth spurt, but also wondering if she's trying to fight her swaddle and that's what's waking her? I've noticed that she seems to be trying to free her arms, and is thrashing around and kicking her legs everywhere while nursing at bedtime. Should I try 1 or 2 arms out? What made you stop swaddling With arms in, other than baby rolling?

Re: Signs to stop swaddling besides rolling?

  • I read somewhere that swaddling after 1 month can possible stunt the babies growth not sure how try that is but anywho .. I stopped swaddling dd at a month and half she would fight to get her arms free... And sleeping on her back she would startle herself during her sleep with her ams and legs loose sleeping only a couple of hours. Finally we put her on her stomach (being that she could lift her head and turn it from side to side with no problem) and sleep 6 hours straight from then on. So it's possibly a sign that she doesn't want to be swaddled anymore. Just gotta figure out what position is more comfortable for her the sleep

  • We stopped swaddling because LO was starting to break loose.  We weaned gradually, doing one arm out, then both, then transitioning to a sleepsack.  I really like the Halo brand ones.  Cute designs, a few different fabrics to choose from, and the inverted zipper is handy for diaper changes.
