PG>35 Weekly Check-In: Endings and Beginnings Edition

[Mobile: PG>35 Weekly Check-In: Endings and Beginnings Edition]

Hello, ladies! It's another beautiful sunny Monday in my corner of the Midwest. We got lots of new folks on board in last week's check-in thread, including our first ladies due in October and (yes!!) November 2013!! How about that!! Sorry I haven't been posting much in the check-in threads, but I do read all of your updates with interest and the occasional sympathetic grimace (lovelyday39, I never thought that relaxin could mess up your JAW. Ouch!).

I have hit 35 weeks now and things are really starting to change. Last week, two major pieces of my life came to a (temporary) end. I have two dogs, and for a long time they have been like my kids. My younger dog, a border collie mix, is active in agility, and we had our last lesson last week. I am just too big to move snappily around the course with her any more. Here's a little clip from our last practice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMfGPNVxXBo&list=UUn8i5AcKA_h01TaH5RU9_Iw&index=1 And my older dog, a collie/shepherd mix, is a therapy dog at a nearby children's hospital. For nearly 5 years now, we have been going in to visit the patients, parents, and staff, and it is the highlight of my dog's week. He twirls and whines when he sees me putting on the hospital uniform shirt and badge I always wear, and he dances eagerly until I open the car door so he can jump in. He is almost 12 so I don't know if or when we will make it back after the baby comes. Our last visit was Friday and it was very bittersweet. Here is a picture of my dog with one of the volunteer administrators: image

But of course, there are also all kinds of new beginnings on the horizon. Today is my birthday. I am 42 today, and for those of you who have read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you may recall that 42 is the answer to life, love, and everything. And next month my son will be making his grand entrance onto the planet, a beginning my DH and I feel so thrilled and lucky to be able to experience. All in all, it's an exciting time, the prelude to a brand new adventure.

I hope this week is good to all of you, and that we all get to experience our own special adventures in parenting. On to the check-in!

Re: PG>35 Weekly Check-In: Endings and Beginnings Edition

  • Happy birthday, young'n! :) I'm happy to report my jaw is back to normal this week. ;)

QOTW: For first-time mommas (FTMs): What part of your pre-baby life do you think you will miss the most after your baby comes? My art, b/c I realize there's not going to be a lot of "hobby time" in the near future :)And probably mostly- SLEEP! LOL!

    Share your updates and vents:
I am 35w2d today- had my shower this weekend and it was just the best! My BFF outdid herself and I really felt the love. Just can't believe it's over and I'm mere seconds from being responsible for a fragile little being- freaks me out a little :)

So, now it's time to finish up the registry, odds and ends, pack the hospital bag and go to all of my weekly appts. Seems like this PG has just blown by!!

  • Loading the player...
  • Oh, therapy dogs are AWESOME! They make staff happy as well as the patients! Moxie used to love coming to the nursing home when I worked there-- especially since on the dementia unit I worked on, there was more food on the floor than on the residents' plates, so Moxie ate like a CHAMP! You are so good to do that!

Updates/Vents: Not much going on, other than trying to get my registries finished for this baby shower. It's so frustrating-- I have 2 registries and yet I STILL can't put certain items that I want on them because the two vendors don't carry some of them. Grrr! I'm also having internet issues which is making the process go sooooo much slower.

Also, still trying to get things organized. But it's difficult when we're a) waiting for the baseboard trim to be finished; and b) have no money to purchase items that will help us get things put away properly. I can't wait for MH to get a job!

  • Hi Ladies -

I'm new to this check in so here's a bit of info

    your screen name: nseeley

    first name (optional): nic

    due date: November 2

sex of baby (if known, or will it be a surprise?): pretty sure we are going to find out but since this will be our last we are considering making it a surprise.

Also, I'm only 34 {gasp} but will be turning 35 this month so hopefully it's ok that I join this board.

QOTW: I am a second time mom but my son is almost 10 years old so it's been so long, I almost feel like a first time mom all over again (which is just wonderful). I am also a stepmom to a little girl who is almost 8 so what I'm most looking forward to is that this baby will be the tie that binds this family together.

Share your updates and vents: I'm anxiously awaiting my first doctors appointment. My last three pregnancies were losses (an ectopic and then two missed m/c in a row) so my doctor stated that as soon as I got pregnant she would get me in for an u/s but I'm holding out to make the appointment until next week (which will be mid 6 weeks) so that hopefully we can see an heartbeat in addition to the baby's placement in the uterus (and fingers crossed - not in the tube)!

  • Happy birthday!!!!! And your dog is so cute! What an important and cool job to have.

QOTW: I will miss doing what I want, when I want. Including sleep.

UPDATES: we had some sad news this week, my furry baby of 13 years passed away on Wednesday. She had been battling cancer for a year and a half and took a sudden turn for the worst while we were on our baby moon in Thailand. We flew home early to spend a couple days with her before we had her put down in our home. She was my soulmate dog and I will cherish all the wonderful memories I have. In happier news, baby girl has been moving and grooving a lot these days which is totally amazing.

Updates: It's still sinking in that we're having a little boy...I wandered into the baby boy clothes in Target today and it felt like foreign territory. My next OB appt is Friday. Other than that, not much going on.

As a first time mom I think I'm going to miss sleeping in the most (sleeping in general).  I look so forward to my days off from work, I love not having to wake up to an alarm.  But I know these days will come to an end so I'm trying to make the most of 'em. I'm also going to miss going out on Friday/Saturday nights every once in a while to hear local bands with my friends (whose kids are all older than 10). But I've been wanting to be pregnant for so long that I'm just fine with letting go of my lazy/social ways.  I am so excited that this is finally happening!

  • danuli that is so great about your therapy dog!   I hope you get back to it eventually.  I am a dog lover too, we have an older golden and a puppy.  They have been our kids too :)

QOTW:  The thing I worry about missing is 1. sleep (duh) and 2. just being able to do whatever whenever.  I wonder when we will get to travel by ourselves again.  We have been together 6 years and had a lot of time to enjoy ourselves before baby so I think for the most part we will embrace the change. It will hopefully be a new wonderful kind of normal.

Updates: I had a good appt. yesterday.  I'm always worried about my bp because it has been borderline high a few times but it was perfectly normal thankfully.  I'm currently scheduled for twice weekly bpp's starting at 36w but my doctor said he would rather start them at 34w due to my age and history.  It looks like I will be there twice a week from here on out.

I'm feeling pretty good but I miss having enough energy to tackle all of the cleaning and other stuff that needs done on weekends.  This week and weekend we have bf class, babycare class and the hospital tour so I'm excited to get those done.

  •  It's so awesome to see the joy that folks get out of having a pet visit!!! My sister regularly brings her little bichon to the nursing home to see my grandmother, in fact we're all pretty sure my grandmother looks forward to that more than having family visit!!

Updates: starting weekly NST today, curious to see how it goes. Had another slightly high BP reading at my OB appt last week. I continue to get good readings at home and my blood work and urine have been totally fine. So for now, we're just going to continue to watch it. Hoping I get through the next 8 wks without any further issues..

I will miss going to dinner and drinks with DH and catching after work drinks with friends wherever and whenever I want. And this is a few years out but I've already discussed with my guy friends, that I will need to stop wandering around my house pantless at some point, the strange things you don't even think of!! I have to say though, upside is we've been saving a TON of money eating in and not drinking!!!

  • Superzuber: I'm so sorry to hear about your furbaby but I'm glad you got to spend some time with her before she was put down.

Happy Birthday danuli.  And like everyone else said--therapy dogs are the best! I work with kids with autism and it's amazing to see our kids interact and come out of their shell when they're around the therapy dogs we work with!!

QOTW: Like most everybody, I am going to miss my sleep the most! And the free time to do my arts and crafts, bake, or just loaf around.

Updates: Yay! I am finally off work and can get back to posting and reading on a regular basis! The last month or so has been hectic!!  I came down with bronchitis which made for many horrible sleepless nights.  Work was crazy as I was trying to wrap things up, write reports, and attend meetings before I left.  Now I can enjoy the next month off getting ready for baby and relaxing! Speaking of baby, everything is looking okay so far.  I started weekly non-stress tests last week and we're meeting our new pediatric cardiologist (closer to home) tomorrow.  Right now, they're still considering her heart condition mild and looks like surgery will happen after 4-6 months.

  • First thing's first. My due date is now August 11th rather than August 20th.

UPDATE: Nothing much here other than I have my anatomy scan next Thursday so I'm pretty excited about that.

QOTW: I guess I'll miss just doing whatever I want when ever I want. For example, going to see an early movie after work by myself, taking impromptu naps on the weekends, spontaneously meeting friends for drinks, etc., etc. Stuff like that.

  • Happy Birthday Danuli!
So amazing how much your dog loves his "work".

The thing I will miss most I think is being able to travel easily. It's going to take a lot more thought and preparation to go anywhere, but I'm sure we'll figure it out as we go.

All is good here. Anatomy scan is scheduled for the 29th. I can't wait, it's starting to finally feel more "real".

Superzuber, I am so sorry you lost your "heart dog." Thank goodness you were able to get home and spend a few days with her before she passed. My therapy dog is my heart dog too, and I dread the day I have to say goodbye. He has already had cancerous tumors removed twice--he seems happy and healthy now, but I am definitely appreciating every day we get to spend together.

  • QOTW: For first-time mommas (FTMs): What part of your pre-baby life do you think you will miss the most after your baby comes?  SLEEP!!!

Update - I'm 14 weeks today and have been really enjoying listening to baby's heartbeat on the doppler every day :)  We'll be having a gender determination u/s on Saturday and I can't wait!  They thought at our NT scan that it might be a girl and we're feeling pretty positive that it is a girl so hopefully we will get that confirmation (although we won't be disappointed at all if it's a boy!).  Today we're meeting with a genetic counselor since my NT blood test showed an elevated risk for Down's and I'll probably do the Mat21 test.  That's about it!

  • Happy birthday! :)

QOTW:  I am looking forward, perhaps with some trepidation, to seeing how my daughter handles her new baby brother.  I am also looking forward to seeing how this little boy will be different or similar to his big sister, and what the differences between a boy baby and a girl baby will be.  DD just started a new school this week and she is adjusting with flying colors, which is surprising and yet not surprising at the same time considering her personality.  So I'm hoping that's a sign she'll take to the next big change coming in her life just as easily.

Updates:  I'm 32 weeks now and starting to notice some swelling in my ankles and feet.  :(  I'm starting to feel really nervous now as this is the time that the preeclampsia started for me last time.  Since my doctor doesn't seem to be taking this very seriously and has not ranked me as a high risk patient yet (she's only seeing me every 3 weeks right now), I have taken matters into my own hands.  I am tracking my weight myself, as well as my blood pressure.   I am taking my blood pressure once a week right now, but will increase it if it starts to rise.  I may also start taking it more often the closer I get to the due date, just because I feel like I should.

  • QOTW:  I think I am going to miss sleep most of all.  DH and I really enjoy our middle of the afternoon weekend naps.  I'll also miss deciding to do things on a whim, but I am sure there will be so many great things we get in return.

Updates:  I passed my repeat one hour GTT, so bring on the pasta.  I washed my first load of tiny baby things last night and we are almost done with the nursery - still waiting on a wall decal from etsy and the seller is being non-responsive.  I'm about ready to file a dispute.

  • Aw, I am a collie owner, and your older doggie is beautiful!  Our first collie made it to 12 1/2 years old, and he would have made an awesome therapy dog, but I didn't really know anything about therapy dogs visiting kids' wards or nursing homes at the time.  My two "mutton-heads" now are too excitable and active, but some day if I get another mellow fellow. . . .  He truly was a hoot - we always used to picture him in a smoking jacket, lapping wine out of our glasses, like some sort of canine Playboy everyman.

QOTW:  I look forward to my son having a playmate.  My little sister and I were lucky to have each other when we were little and I really hope my boys can have that same experience.  I will miss be able to give my undivided attention to my first born, though, when he wants to show me his crazy-shake dance, or his jumping jacks, or playing "cave" under the big blankets.  I mean, we'll still be able to do all of those things, but it will be different, balancing time between two awesome kids instead of only one having you all to himself.

  • I am 39 Weeks today and have not made any progress. I go to the OB on Monday and we will discuss induction if no progress is made by then. I have issued LO an eviction notice, so we will see if she gets the message. I am getting BH contractions, but no real ones yet.

QOTW: SLEEP!!!! I love to sleep in on weekends and know those days are extremely numbered!

    AL always welcome!

  • QOTW: For first-time mommas (FTMs): What part of your pre-baby life do you think you will miss the most after your baby comes? Probably either the sleeping in, or the days where DH and I just hang out, though those days are getting less and less

Share your updates and vents: I am 16w 2d now. I am starting to show a bit and its not just fat! I am having issues with work and getting my pregnancy uniform though. My A/S in in 4 weeks, and I cannot wait. Otherwise, doing good. My glucose 3h came up passed, and my N/T bloodwork all negative. So far, so good.

    due date  11/3/13

sex of baby (if known, or will it be a surprise?) I had dreams of being a team greener last time - but they went right out the window when we had out u/s last time.  I am pretty sure the same thing will happen this time!

QOTW: I am most looking forward to my dd being able to interact with her sibling.  This baby will complete our family so I am also looking forward to never having to ttc again!
