Freezer meal recipes & advice

So I've been looking up a lot of recipes online for freezer meals.  I've never done freezer meals so I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing :)

Anyone have any favorite freezer meal recipes you'd like to share?  Any advice for those of us who've never done it before?

Re: Freezer meal recipes & advice

  • I usually just make stuff like lasagna, baked enchiladas, casseroles, etc.  There isn't really much advice to it -- just wrap it well...

I (not environmentally friendly) like to use disposable pans so I can just toss em and not deal with dishes.

  • Some super easy things to start with would be chili, pasta sauces, anything in a crock pot, casseroles.  Just cook and freeze in an air tight container or bag!

  • Annie's Eats has a great post: https://www.annies-eats.com/2011/03/28/stocking-the-freezer-make-ahead-meals/

I'm also planning to make a double batch of her Chicken Taquitos: https://www.annies-eats.com/2011/04/27/creamy-chicken-taquitos/

These dumplings are awesome, and you can make different fillings for them: https://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/plump-pea-dumplings-recipe.html

We'll also be freezing batches of vegetarian and chicken chili (we use the Joy of Cooking recipes).

Other recipes on our make-ahead list:

Looneyspoons' Rome on the Range soup  (I highly recommend this cookbook if you don't have it!!)

    Chicken pot pies

    Lasagna

    Good luck!

First off, we have so much in common! I'm due April 7 with a boy and have two weimaraners (one is a blue like yours). :)

I'm also new to freezer meals.  I live in Atlanta and there's a place called Casserole's where you can pick them up, already frozen (but made with fresh ingredients and no preservatives).  I've been looking at pinterest as well for things I can make on my own - here's a link to a few good looking recipes:

    Good luck!

That's awesome!  Are you doing anything to prepare them for the baby?  We've been working with him but I'm still not sure he's ready and I don't want him to have a negative experience involving the baby.

  • i made about 20 meals in preparation for baby, and i was my first experience with it. the majority of the meals i made were ones that could be unthawed and thrown into the crock-pot. so most were 'no-cook' prep, basically chopping up veggies, preparing sauces and throwing them in a bag with meat. i got all of my ideas off of pinterest, just type in 'freezer meals' into the search.

if you decide to store your meals in gallon freezer bags- please take this advice. place each gallon bag into a grocery bag, when you go to store them. i did not do this originally, and ALL of my gallon freezer bags got frozen together! it took like 2 hours to separate all of the bags- it was a nightmare!

good luck! the 20 meals i made took me about 5-6 hours. it was exhausting, but i know it will be so worth it!

  • I got overwhelmed thinking about spending more time cooking/prepping freezer meals when I feel like I have so much to do already. DH and I actually sat down yesterday and planned out our dinners for the month, so that all would be doubled and the second half going straight to the freezer. This way we are only spending a little more time cooking each day instead of having to spend a few days doing it. To us this is more manageable and we will have almost a month's worth of freezer meals with only a little extra effort.

  • When I make those same items, I double the batch and put some in the freezer to eat later.  You can do it in whole batches or just take the leftovers and freeze those to make for quick lunches or dinners.

yes, I do this too -- when I make stuff like pans of lasagna or enchiladas, it is just as easy to make two, so I'll make two and freeze one and keep one in the fridge for dinner that night or the next day!
