Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Help with sleeping...

My little boy is 5 months old... he is bottle fed and eats approximately 16-20 oz during the day - I try to get him to eat more but he won't.  He wakes up 3-4 times a night starving and won't go back to sleep until he eats.  I'm guessing he's not getting enough during the day which is why he's waking up??  Any advice is appreciated as Mama needs some sleep =)

Re: Help with sleeping...

  • Throughout the day LO usually takes just one breast, but before bed I get him to take both. Nurse him, change his diaper and put him in his jammies, then nurse the other side, and he sleeps until 2 or sometimes 5 or 6am. Are you sure he's hungry? I've read of other Moms would have their husbands soothe baby back to sleep, because they're just eating out of habit.

  • He opens his mouth and whips his head back and forth, so he seems hungry... I've tried to soothe him and put his pacifier back in which only helps for about 10-15 minutes.  My husband is deployed so no help with someone else to soothe him back to sleep.  I don't feel like 16-20 oz during the day is enough though for a 5 month old.. is it?
  • I believe that 25-30 oz is about what a 5 month old should be eating. How often do you feed him? I still feed my LO every 3 hours during the day and he eats about 25 oz a day. Is he gaining weight fine? When does your pedi say you can start cereal? I don't know if that would help at all. It didn't seem to have any effect on our LO. I think some things just need time.
