It's basically low carb, high protein. You would get the majority of carbs from fruits and veggies. The idea is to "eat like a caveman". No processed foods, preferably organic stuff, grass fed meats, and such. You can have some nuts, but no legumes. No grains. Some people still eat a small amount of dairy, some don't. I haven't done all organic because its nt always available or affordable, but I get it when I can.
It does take some getting used to, but I know a bunch of people who've gotten awesome results with it. I figured I would give it a shot because I've done really well with Atkins in the past, but found it too restrictive to stick with long term. I have a bunch of weight to lose, so I don't want to be stuck with a way of eating that makes me miserable.
I read the Primal blueprint which had a lot if great info. The author has a website too. I think it's called Marks Daily Apple. It's worth looking into if your interested.
ETA: looking back I realized it is supposed to be grass fed meats. I accidentally put grain fed.
I want to try it, but I'm scared! I really don't do well with diets at all, which is why my weight hasn't really changed much in a long time (besides gaining and losing the baby weight.) But my sister is getting married this summer and I really want to look good for that, and I know people who have had good luck with Paleo too.
Is the Primal Blueprint a book about Paleo? I have browsed the website before but was thinking I should read more about it.
I think primal diets and paleo diets are very similar, but have a few tiny differences. I'm not entirely sure though. I'm still learning. I was scared to get started too, but after the first few days it really isn't bad. I'm so satisfied that I haven't felt the need to snack between meals at all lately. The only thing that is kind of a pain is that there aren't really any packaged or convenience foods you can have. So there is a lot of food prep and its hard to grab something on the run. It just requires a little more planning ahead.
Thanks CMonkey! I like the idea of non-processed foods and think I could handle that.
Can you put anything on the veggies? Or is it eating plain, raw broccoli all the time? I love veggies but I generally need a little something on them. Like broccoli and dip or steamed brussel sprouts with a little butter, know what I mean?
Sorry for the 20 questions, but I am intrigued...and I feel like you seem more of a "normal person" than some of my IRL friends who do Paleo. They are body builders and die hards for this.
No problem. Lol, yeah I'm certainly no bodybuilder. You don't have to eat your veggies plain. You can use butter, certain oils, and seasonings. I like to roast mine with olive oil, salt, and garlic. I'm not sure if you can have actual ranch from the bottle, but there are a bunch of recipes where people make things like that from scratch and adjust it to be paleo friendly.
There are tons of great recies and substitute ideas out there. That has made this a much easer transition for me. Like the other day I made burgers (paleo friendly) and used roasted portobello caps in place of the bun. It.was.amazing!
Also I've read that is fine to take an 80/20 approach to the diet. So eat only paleo 80% of the time, and non-paleo the other 20%. So you can still have a treat now and then. I'm being more strict until I lose some more weight, then I'll allow myself an occasional cheat.
Ok, this sounds much more reasonable! I think the people I know IRL who do it are mutants who would actually prefer to eat raw cauliflower over chocolate, so I feel like I can't ask them questions. They would be like "what do you mean you need butter? Cavemen didn't need butter!!"
I am going to read more about it and try it - you've inspired me! I've seen a few recipes on Pinterest that look good and are paleo too - like eggplant pizza where the eggplant is the crust. Keep me updated on how you are doing, and let me know if you have any good recipes to share! Thanks again!
Your welcome! Glad I could help. It will be nice to know someone who's doing this too. I have a few recipes I'm going to try soon. I'll definitely keep you informed.
