Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Starting LO on cereal

Hi, my baby boy just turned 3 months tho past Friday. I was wondering, at what age should I start introducing solids, mainly cereal? My pedi said I can start now if I want.
Is 3 months too early? Also, rice or oatmeal?
How about fruits and veggies? I really hope I don't have to wait til 6 months to start him on those.
Thanks, FTM here and clueless!

Re: Starting LO on cereal

  • Every pedi seems to have different opinions. Newer guidelines recommend 6 months. Our pedi is a little more old school and usually okays cereal at 4 months. DD is almost 4 months but I don't feel like she's ready. Even though she is really strong and active, she still pushes her tongue out all the time so we'll wait. With DS, we split the difference and started cereal at 5 months and purees at 6 months. Some people skip cereal totally. You may hear some very strong opinions on this board, but just do what you think is right for your LO.

  • I'm a FTM, too. Our pedi gave us the go ahead at 4 months. We tried rice cereal then, but he didn't quite have the tongue thrust reflex gone, so we laid off of solids for a couple of weeks. Now he can swallow fine, and he can sit up pretty well, which is really helpful. Feedings are much more enjoyable for all of us.

He now eats oatmeal and barley cereal. We'll try veggies and fruit down the road.

There is NO rush because it's all for practice anyways. I wouldn't start anything this early...there's no point.

    I agree!

  • You can start offering a few bites and see how your LO responds. If he seems interested, then go ahead with the cereals/ purees. The key is to take it very slow and give the baby space to explore his food. If he is having a difficult time or becomes upset then it's best to stop and try again later. As long as you're following his lead and letting him be ready at his own pace it will make the transition a lot easier.

I do however agree with PP to not rush the solids, because it is more challenging and it's not really necessary yet. Do what you think is best, but there's no hurry.

  • My son is 4.5 months old and I just started him on rice cereal. He is showing a lot of interest in what mom and dad are eating so I think that is a sign he is ready to try some solids. His doctor said it was ok to start on some foods now but introduce them slowly. It also helps find any food allergies.
