Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Toddler Snacks & Airport Security

I'm going to be traveling with my little one soon, and he is obviously going to need food and milk at some point during the flight. I certainly do not want to buy him the junk they sell inside airport terminals, and do they even sell milk in terminals?

What has your experience been with taking healthy snacks through security at airports? Will they confiscate them and leave a child with no food?

I'm assuming that I may probably be able to get whole milk at a coffee shop around a terminal, but I am sure it's not going to be organic as my son is used to.

Re: Toddler Snacks & Airport Security

  • You can bring snacks for your kids.  I always bring a couple of sippy cups of milk and/or juice for each and snacks (fruit puree packets, etc.)  I have never had a problem.  Once we had TSA ask me to open the sippy cups so that they could test the liquids with litmus paper (they just hold the paper over the top, no dipping into the liquid).  I always put all the sippy cups in my insulated bag and let TSA know when I get up to them that there are liquids for the kids in that bag.  And yes, you can buy milk in most airports.

Did you bring the milk in the sippy cups from home? Or did you purchase it at the airport?

  • From home.  I have bought it from the airport before though too when we have had long layovers.

  • I have taken bottles, and they just test it like PP said. Although, I would guess there is milk in the terminals. Most restaurants sell it at least, not sure about the convenience stores there. You can take your sippy cup and transfer it.

Good to know about the pouches. Any food that isn't liquid should be fine to take thru security as well. A lot of people pack a whole lunch to eat on their plane, so I'm sure a banana and apple are cool. I have brought back NM chile numerous times, and it's always fine.

  • I've loved flying with our kids as I actually pack sandwiches for DH and I too.  I just say all the food is for the kids and on our way we go.  I also take water bottles 'for the kids'.

  • The restrictions is on liquids not food.... I've always and still do bring full meals through security with me when I travel. It has never been an issue. What is regulated are liquids greater than 3.2oz and the TSA has tons of Q&A's on their website about what you are allowed to bring when traveling with an infant under the age of 2. You are allowed to bring sippy cups of milk and water for your child through security. At a smaller airport it took 15 mins to get through security, while at Ft Lauderdale it took 45 mins when it was my turn and I packed the same way for both airports- it took 30 mins of waiting in line for me to be stopped for 45 mins with my bags getting searched. They were a giant PITA and put each ice pack, food pouch, teething ring, empty cup, you name it from the bags through the xray machine separately.  And yes, I was in the family line!! They didn't confiscate a single item.

  • P.S. Before LO, I would use my quart size bag allowance of 3.2oz liquids to the best use possible by filling it with alcohol spirits since airlines charge a huge fee and it helps calm the nerves. Now I just toss a couple in with my shampoo and lotion.

I have nothing to add to the conversation, but I just wanted to let you know that you've got me craving green chili now.

  • I flew with DD when she was about 13m.  I brought those single serve milks, a couple empty sippy cups, food in pouches and just other snacks.  Each airport treated it all differently.  The small airport in my home town wanted one pouch open to test and one milk open to test.  The airport in MN wanted each one opened and since they only stay good for an hour, I had to ditch pretty much all but one.  And had to ditch the milk since I didn't have ways to transport it.  The MN airport had some machine that if the liquid was in something that had a clear bottom, they could test it without opening it.  The Omaha airport didn't have the machine but was similar to MN.  It so annoying how different each airport is...I wish they had clear directions on the website and that they all followed it the same.  Also, every plane I went on the flight attendants would tell me a different thing for what was allowed with DD in the carrier.  One lady said only at take-off/landing it needed to be off, one said she didn't care what I did, and one dude said not at all the entire flight :/

  • I have never had a problem when bringing milk, water, snacks, or even fruit pouches for my LO through security. I never by anything in the airport for him and we take a lot of edible stuff with us to keep him busy.
