Massage - laying on back ok?

My neck is really killing me so I'm thinking of getting a massage soon.  I had a prenatal massage when I was pg w/ DS & half the time was on my back, half on my belly (w/ a special pillow support).  I'm just wondering is it ok to lay on your back for that long getting a massage??  If I can remember I think the table may have been elevated a bit so I wasn't totally flat...  My Dr had said not to lay on my back for an extended period due to restricting blood flow to the baby - but I never had any issues before - like trouble breathing, etc..  I'm sure it'll be fine - just wondering what your ladies thoughts were??  thx!

  • As long as you don't have trouble breathing or light headedness I would say go for it. They can always lay you partially on your side if you are concerned.

  • If you don't have issues, it's not a problem. Your body will tell you if you should move.

thanks - that's what I was thinking & now I remember my Dr saying it too.  just over-worrying like usual...!  ;)

  • I just had one the other day and I was fine.  A massage is usually only 60 min or so , so you should be fine.

  • LMT here... since you are only 24 weeks, you can have the therapist simply take a towel or 2 and fold them into a 2" square.  Simply place that under your right hip which will rotate your pelvis ever so slightly to the left.  It's just enough to keep the pressure off your IVC (blood vessel) but not enough to make you uncomfortable.

    Enjoy!

  • If I try and lay flat on my back I get a horrible headache almost immediately, but if not you may be ok.

When I've had a prenatal massage they had me lay on my side.

  • I had a massage a couple weeks ago and stayed on my sides for most of it, only laid on my back for like 15 minutes total.  So if you prefer not to be on your back, you can still get a prefectly good massage.

That being said, I am sure if you are comfortable on your back then that means you are fine.  As PPs have said, your body will tell you if need to switch positions.

    Enjoy your massage! :)

  • My mom is a massage therapist and she sort of props me up with a folded body pillow when I'm on my back so I'm not lying completely flat. Then I lie mainly on my left side for all the work she does on my back, and on my right side for no more than 10 minutes. I'd just be sure to go to a reputable massage therapist who is experienced in prenatal work. He or she will know how to take care of you.
