carseat canopies?

Are carseat canopies a must-have, a good idea, or a waste?  I am a FTM and They look cute, but do the babies got hot under them in the hot humid summer? (I live in Baltimore, and the humidity is killer) or do they really keep LO cool?  It just seems to me it would keep the heat in rather than just make it shady..

So anyone use them? Am I overthinking?  A must-have or a don't bother?

Re: carseat canopies?

  • i got one, haven't had the baby yet, but someone told me to get one to use when in stores shopping or like we go to the bowling alley once a week and it kinda keeps people from getting in the baby's face!  I live in Florida, so I don't plan to use it outside (figure the shade on the stroller/carseat should be enough).

  • I don't get how these things aren't a SIDS risk. Baby is rebreathing its own CO2 when that thing is over the car seat.

  • Are you talking about those fitting cotton covers?  I wouldn't bother.  If you have the A&A swaddle blankets, they double really well as carseat cover-up and they are so gauzy that you wouldn't worry about them affecting heat or CO2 buildup. The only issue is keeping them in place if you are on the move.

I've had some older ladies completely disregard the blanket over the carseat to take it upon themselves for an uninvited peek.  The nerve!!!

  • Thanks for the input ladies, I think I will cross this off the list.  A nice gauzy blanket sounds good
  • I agree with pp about the a&a muslin blanket. Also adding that I use a snuza shade for dd.  Use both over her infant car seat and when she is in her stroller. It has several velcro straps and elastic so it fits various shapes without sliding off.  Brilliant for protecting her from the sun. She was a July desert baby so that thing went with us everywhere.  I'm sure this is obvious but it was never used while she was in the car. I got it on Amazon
