Daycare and bottles

Last week, just before DD's 1 year ped appt., I noticed that daycare had given her four bottles one day. That seemed totally out of whack, since she only has a total of three on weekends. So I mentioned it to my ped; he says he wants her off a bottle by 18 mos., and he only wants her having 4, 6-oz servings of milk, or 3 if she has yogurt/cheese.

The next day I say to my DCP "can you guys try to only give her one bottle during the day? I think when she has a lot it upsets her tummy." She says fine, no problem. The next day, she says to me "Charlotte was really unhappy that she couldn't have a bottle whenever she wanted."

Now, to me, I think - DUH, of course. She's used to dictating what she gets and when. I'm a little disappointed that they allowed her to just bang on the fridge and get a bottle whenever she wanted. Am I overreacting when I say "she's a year old, she'll deal with it?"

Re: Daycare and bottles

  • I would drop it slowly, like go from 4 to 3 to 2 then down to one - do it over a few weeks.  That or you could decrease how many ounces they give her.

If you want to do the bottle cold turkey then I'd find some sippies so she can get a drink when she wants.

At our daycare they know the signs for milk and DS will sign it so they give him his milk sippy.  He self weaned off bottles so that wasn't an issue for him.

As far as "she will deal with it" it is hard for a young toddler to just deal with something they don't understand.  If she has an attachment to her bottle then I'd drop it slowly or go cold turkey - I wouldn't just drop fast down to one after she's been getting 4.

  • I agree with pp.  Also, did you tell them they could give her water as well during the day.  Maybe start with 3 bottles of WCM and one bottle of water and gradually switch them out.

  • Of course she seemed unhappy. She was used to getting them and now you're trying to slowly take them away. I would gradually decrease the # of bottles per day like PP's said. With Audra I offered the sippy first and put whatever was left over in a bottle for her to finish because I was so paranoid that she would become dehydrated. I think I was fixated on the 16 ounce end of 12-16 ounces of dairy. Once I started to think about the lower 12-13 ounce range I realized she was drinking enough out of the sippy plus she was getting her yogurt and cheese so I stopped offering the bottle. I think she may still be getting one during the day at DC. I was actually going to ask about it when I pick her up this afternoon.

  • We ended up compromising on it and they split the one 8-oz bottle into 2 4-oz bottles. She drinks water constantly throughout the day.

Thanks for reminding me that she probably deals with "dealing with it" about as well as I do - that is to say, not well at all.

  • I agree with PP. You need to slow down the decrease. I think I would scale down to four 5 oz bottles or space three 6 oz's a bit more apart. Then pull back by another ounce next week or space the bottles out even a bit more.
