Removing night night bottles....

I think I will continue giving Reece a "na-night" bottle, I can't part with him not having one before bed yet, I need that time with him since I work so much. But I am curious, how you guys did it, if your LO relied on that night time bottle to sleep.  Did he STTN after you cut it out? Give me the scoop in case I do decide to rid his bottles completely... it's heartbreaking to think :(

Re: Removing night night bottles....

  • I thought I would continue to give Audra one for awhile. We usually eat dinner between 6-6:30PM and she's in bed by 7-7:30PM depending on the day. One day at dinner she drank almost her whole 4 ounces of milk so I said to DH, "well I don't want to give her a bottle now, she just drank her milk" so I didn't make the bottle. Right now I am putting some water in her sippy if she finishes her milk at dinner or leaving the milk from dinner in it (if she didn't do too well) and letting her sip until she pushes it away. She then goes to bed.

She hasn't reacted negatively to this at all and is still sleeping her usual 11-12 hours overnight.

  • One night I just didn't give him the bottle and that was it. I was really sad, but nothing changed, fortunately. I still rock him to sleep regardless of how much he squirms!

  • I am dreading giving up nursing.  It's one of the only ways DS cuddles.  DD was the same way, and instead of the bottle we rocked and sang songs.  She loved it, and still sometimes asks me to sing to her at 5.

  • This bottle was the hardest for me to decide to cut out! He has weaned to only 2 bottles a day, wake up in the morning and bed time bottle. At his one year check up his ped said that she likes to see babies completely off bottles by 15mo. That night, I decided to just stop them both and be done with bottles. I had been giving him milk in sippies before then and was working on cutting out formula by mixing it with milk. So, anyway, that night I just didn't give him a bottle. I offered him a sippy cup of milk and he got really mad at me and slung it across the room, took his pacifier, lovey and wanted to just be put down in his bed. I was really upset because the bed time bottle was the only time I really had to snuggle with him because he won't really let me otherwise. So, night number 2, same thing, took the cup and slung it. He was really mad at me for about a week and wouldn't let me rock him at all! But, again, the only time he would really let me do it was with that bed bottle. His sleep habit did not change, and he went to sleep with no problem! So, he stayed mad at me for about a week but he's over it now. He is letting me rock him a little now and he's not as mad as he was...we're on 2 weeks no bottle, cold turkey!

  • I know how you feel. I think I'm being selfish by not cutting out his bedtime bottle. The other night I just bit the bullet and tried it. I gave him a sippy with milk while I read him bedtime stories. Then I gave him a bath, rocked him, and he went down like normal. Usually his bottle comes after his bath right before he goes down.

He slept just fine and didn't seem to notice the change.
