Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Reflux or Overeating or Neither?

We're going to the pedi on Friday so I will ask him then, but I just wanted to see if you guys had similar experiences.

Nearly all the time I feed DS, he has a terrible spit up afterward.  There seems to be tons and it comes out his nose and everything.  The thing is that it doesn't seem to bother him at all.  He doesn't cry when it's happening- it just happens.

I thought maybe I was overfeeding him, but I try to follow that you can't overfeed a BF baby and when he wants more, he wants more.  We burp him a ton after he eats and we get some good burps, but we still get hiccups almost every time as well.  We spend some time upright afterwards too because I heard that helps if they have reflux, but it's during the upright time that he has the major spit up.

Maybe he's just a spitter?  Anyone else?

Re: Reflux or Overeating or Neither?

  • DS does the same thing. My pedi said that all babies have reflux, it's ACID reflux that is painful and what to watch for. He said as long as he doesn't seem bothered by his spit up and he's gaining weight then things are fine. I think he overeats though and that's what causes it - because he spits up a lot less or not at all when he spaces his feedings out. I think he comfort nurses and gets food he doesn't need and it comes back out!

  • My DS has reflux and his symptoms were/are; crying/screaming during and after feeding, arching back during and after feeding, tons of spit up, wouldn't sleep when laying flat, choking a lot and being very fussy.

If he is just spitting up I would think that he might be sensitive to something you are eating. Maybe a milk or soy allergy. I would definitely talk to the pedi about it.

  • There is what they call a "happy spitter" - a baby who spits up a lot who doesn't seem bothered by it.  But given that it's coming out of his nose, I think it's worth asking about.  DS spit up a ton and was put on reflux meds and did MUCH better.  He's now outgrown the problem and hasn't had meds in a few weeks.
