Do I need a manual AND an electric pump?

FTM mom here awaiting LO's arrival in April.  I received both a manual and an electric pump at my shower this past weekend.  Do I need/should I keep both, or just the electric?  My goal is to breastfeed primarily/I'll be home most of the time.  Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Do I need a manual AND an electric pump?

  • A manual is good for pumping while out (like, if you go to an event and don't necessarily want to lug around an electric) and an electric is far more useful for pumping when you want to get as much as  possible as fast as possible. I'd keep both being as you have them.

  • I have both, and used both pretty frequently.  We ended up having a lot of weddings when I was breastfeeding, so I would tuck my manual pump in my purse to use during all the wedding related festivities.  The manual I have is about $30 at Target, so definitely worth it for the amount I used it.  I didn't start out with both, I bought the manual when E was about 6 months old.  So glad I did!

  • I only have an electric but I don't use it often.  The manual would be handy if you are on the go and need to pump somewhere where you might not have access to an outlet.  On the other hand, your electric pump might have a battery pack so you could always use that.

If there is an item you need that you don't have yet, I would consider exchanging the manual.  But if you think you are all set, then it won't hurt to have both.

  • I respond really well to my manual and at nine months in as a working mom they both get used. I'd say keep the manual great for relieving the initial engorgement and date nights

    This.

I work full time so I use the electric for pumping sessions at work. But when I just need a quick bottle before going out or while I'm out and about, I like the manual as there is less set up, fewer parts and can fit in my purse

  • I have both and use the electric one for everyday use (pumping at home or work).  If I go out somewhere I will bring the manual one...it takes longer but you don't have to lug the big one with you.
  • I had both and was glad I did.  I work part time, so used the double electric at work.  I used the manual when out if I needed to pump some.

If I didn't work, I could have definitely gotten by with the just the manual pump.

  • I would keep both. I like using the manual better, because it's easier set up and clean up, plus I can use it wherever. And honestly, I haven't really noticed much of a difference in how fast I get the same amount of milk with a manual vs. electric. The manual works very well for me.
