Do you answer the door?

If you're home alone (without DH/SO) do you answer the door? A friend from church just stopped by to give me something and I had to peek out the side window to see who it was before I went do the door. I pretty much never answer the door if DH isn't home.

What about you?

Why?

Re: Do you answer the door?

  • I live on the second floor, so people have to buzz to enter. I'll answer the buzzer, but if I'm not expecting someone, I generally don't let anyone in the building.

    City living/fear of scams.

  • Loading the player...
  • I usually do, but it's hardly ever anyone but family or friends.

  • My door is always locked during the day, especially when DH is OOT. If I'm not expecting anyone, I'll peek through the window and see who it is. If it's someone I don't know I don't generally answer.

My reasoning... the movie "Law Abiding Citizen." I'm paranoid. Although, I was paranoid before this movie came out.

  • Yes. I very rarely even look to see who it is.
  • No!  Pretty much no one comes over unannounced so if the doorbell rings I usually hide/try to sneak a look out the window at who it is or their car.  95% of the time it is the Jehovah's and they just leave literature and go.  I do not want to talk about religion with anyone, let alone a group of strangers.  The only other people who just show up is these scary pinestraw guys MH sometimes buys pinestraw from.  Anyway, I am just a little paranoid!

I pretty much always answer the door, but I always look through the window first.  I have refused once or twice when the person looked sketchy, I think.  And I almost didn't answer for our neighbour once: DH had actually asked me not to, because the guy is an alcoholic and basically always drunk and has shady friends hanging around a lot.  But then I realized that he needed me to move my car so his gf could get out of the driveway, so I opened the door after all.

  • Yes, I will answer it if it is someone I want to talk to. When it is people from the church, solicitors, etc. I ignore it. DH being home or not does not factor into my door answering.
  • Yes. If it suits me. The door is always unlocked so FiL can stop in whenever without potentially waking babies.
If I do something else and don't want to stop, I don't open. But that is not what you meant i gather.

I am not scared, I just feel very safe where I am and like I can deal with an intruder if i had to.
And then there is Shadow. Between the two of us, I pity the fool choosing our house to break into or whatever.

  • Only if we are expecting something or someone. If we aren't I just ignore the door. We have a lot of windows and I worry someone will see me checking and then not answering. We also have a dog who tries to be ferocious but fails miserably!

  • Yes, I answer, the problem is I can not find my doorbell.  We took it down to hang some hooks  I think it went out with the tools.  We tell most people we know to just walk in.

    This, exactly,

  • Yes, it's usually UPS or the meter reader. Currently I'm waiting for the Verizon guy who is taking forever! I'm getting so annoyed he may not want me to open the door.

  • We are on the first floor in the city, so I will look out the window before answering. I only answer for someone I know or for the UPS guy...who I practically know.

ETA: We have two entrances, and people we know always come to the back door.

I am sure I could not deal with an intruder and I think that's what scares me. I would do everything in my power but I'm just not big or strong and my Australian Shepherd puppy isn't big enough to scare anyone off yet. She will be someday though haha

Haha, oops!  Our doorbell doesn't work, but I didn't even realize we had one for the longest time.  We kept getting notices that they'd tried to deliver packages and nobody was home when I'd been here the whole time.  It was a pain in the butt to then have to go pick it up.  We finally realized what was happening ("ringing" a doorbell that looked incredibly broken and made no sound and then leaving without knocking) so DH covered up the doorbell with tape.  Now they knock and we haven't missed any deliveries.

  • I always open the door.  I feel very safe where I live.  The only people who come to our door during the week are delivery people.  My dog is never more than two inches behind me when I open the door.

  • Yes, but only because of where we live. It's pretty hard to find our house unless you know it's here and people tell me all the time that they've lived in our city their whole lives and never knew our street existed. Plus with all of our yard being at the front of the property, chances are I've heard you coming from way off by the time you get to the front door.

  • The front door? Usually not.  We don't use our front door and neither do our friends/family.  Plus, our home gym (elliptical and some free weights) would have to be moved to open the door.

The back door? I peak out the window to see who it is.

  • No way. Unless I am expecting someone and I'm positive it's them. I might peek out the window, but if I don't recognize them no way I'm answering. We live in a suburb of Allentown pa and there are some crazies around here. I also don't answer my phone if I don't know the number. I guess I'm an introvert and a scaredy cat.

I'm the same with my phone also. I don't trust anyone anymore. We can be introverts/scaredy cats together!

  • I answer the door but I might peek outside to see who is there first. We live in a rural area so not much happens around here and it is pretty safe. When I lived in the Bay Area I always looked to see who it was and then sometimes I wouldn't answer if I was uncomfortable. I also refuse to answer if it is a religious group (no offense to anyone).

  • I do, but I have a very loud barky dog, so people who don't have a good reason to be there generally don't stick around.

  • I usually peek first to see if its someone I want to talk to. Its too hard to wrangle a 70lb mutt and a toddler in order to tell someone I don't want to buy their shiz or read the book or mormon or whatever.

It really depends on whether or not I'm wearing pants.  I won't answer the door if I'm a hot mess, but I've never been concerned about whether it's safe.

    LOL

  • I usually do unless its church people. We have a small house and its easy for anyone at the front door to see if we are in the livingroom or not. I always peek out before I open the door though, and rarely have anyone come by unexpectedly. Also I keep the door locked at all times.

This is me exactly.  My husband complains that I'm scared of all people and I think everyone is going to cut off my head and bury me in the back yard.  He is correct!!

Not usually.nbsp; We have 4 rottweilers and 1 doberman among our family pets.nbsp; So usually I peek out the window and if it looks like someone who I dont want to talk too, I say "go peek" to the dogs and they go to the front door.nbsp; That usually scares off anyone we dont want to talk too.

Prove it!! I want pet pictures or your lying. Rotts are my favorite breed

  • Sometines i do. Sometimes i dont

  • I don't open the door. But it's rare people come in our gates because we have a dog. They usually just skip our house.

I do this too and it drives DH crazy. Around here people leave their doors unlocked all of the time and their keys in the car ignition. I have to lock up everything. As soon as I close a door I lock it which has caused DH to be locked out on many occasions (almost every day during summer if he is working outside). This behavior is a hold over from living in California.

Yeah it took me awhile to get DH to the point where he locks the door every time too. He wasn't really on board with it until a few years ago when a bank down the street was robbed. The robber fled into our neighborhood and went to a random house that happened to have its door unlocked. He held the family inside hostage for several hour before giving up. DH started being mindful of locking the doors after that.

Stuff like that isn't very common here, but you never know. If a criminal wants to get into my home they probably will, but I'm certainly not going to make it easy for them.

    This exactly.

Also, as pp said, I probably already know if someone is walking up to my door because my dog goes nuts. His bark is definitely bigger than his bite, though. But people at the door don't know that...when they see him, they just see a pitbull mix, not a cute lovable pooch, and that's fine with me.
