Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Question RE Reflux Babies

DD is 13 weeks and has silent reflux.  I think she's finally doing better on Alimentum RTF and Prilosec. Ped GI recommended several things including keeping her upright 30 minutes after feeding.

Those of you with reflux babies- do you keep them upright 30 mins? It's fine during the day, but at 4 AM I'm ready to faceplant on the glider after she eats and falls back to sleep. Of course I want to do whatever's best for DD but MOTN feedings are bad enough without having to sit there for an additional half hour.

What do you do?

Re: Question RE Reflux Babies

  • LO is now 6 months and (thankfully) we no longer need to do night feeds but when we were feeding at night we ALWAYS stayed up an extra 20-30 mins to keep him upright.   I remember how brutal it was, so I can totally relate but I was more worried about the repercussions of not doing it.

Sorry... probably not what you wanted to hear!

  • How often are you feeding at night?  LO has a reflux problem too.  We feed her about 10-11 and wake her at 3 then she doesn't get up again until we get ready for work.  If you can get your LO down to 1 feeding a night, it's rough but nearly so bad as multiple feedings.
  • We are no longer night feeding either but we are on Alimentum and zantac ourselves. It's funny, we were never told to keep him upright 20-30 mins after a feeding. We had his crib mattress propped up a bit for a few months though, so maybe that helped?

  • DD has GERD and she gets up at 4am for a feeding, we usually sit up about 15 mins after cause if I wait any longer than that she is out and I'm trying to put her down drowsy but awake and she seems to not have a problem. Plus I've weened her off the Zantac but keep it on hand just in case!

  • DS is currently waking all night with the 4 month wakeful. Every couple hours. When he does eat I still hold him up for the extra time. That's what they need.
  • Yes she currently only wakes once around 4 AM.  Last night I held her for 30 minutes from when she finished the bottle, then layed her down to swaddle.  As soon as I picked her up she vomited on me.  It didn't wake her up though, but I had to change her.  UGGHH! Hate reflux!!!!!
