Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Nap troubles

Our LO just turned 6 months today.  He used to be a great napper then we hit, what I thought was the 4 month wakeful, and getting him to nap was a nightmare... So we resorted to the "whatever works" strategy.  This strategy led us to naps in his stroller... It was literally the only thing that would work and get us a well rested baby.

Fast forward  to 8 weeks later (today) and we are still only napping in his stroller.  He won't be rocked to sleep anymore, the swing no longer works and forget his crib, where, even if we are successful at rocking til he's drowsy, he immediately wakes when we put him down - even if we swaddle him - which he seems to hate during the day.  The fact he hates the swaddle during the day is crazy because we still swaddle at night (one arm in and one out) and he sleeps pretty well.

Leaving him in his crib to fall asleep or even fuss/cry seems to defeat the purpose since we can struggle with him for up to an hour, for what would be an hour nap.... Doesn't seem to make sense?  We're not really big proponents of CIO, is this our only option at this point?  I'd love any suggestions you may have!

Re: Nap troubles

  • He associated stroller with sleep. So when he wakes up and tries to resettle he cant bc hes in a new setting. Im reading feebers book and another by jodi mendel. It talks about sleep associations which i never realized until i picked up these books. You could slowly expose him to crib..play in there etc. maybe rock before you put him down so he gets the sensation of movement...or do cio. Im was hesitant of it and tried everything but.. But were into a few days of cio and its working.

  • CIO might be an option for sure, and make sure you have a routine for nap times that clues him in it's time for sleep. You will go through a bit of a tough transition from the needing movement to sleep but he will be ok within a few days/maybe even a week or two. keep with the routine too for sure!

  • This happened to us too - right around the same time.   My LO started waking up twice as often at night and became a nightmare at nap time.   It is slowly improving but like you, I resorted to whatever works! She will sleep in her crib no problem at night but refuses to nap there!  I have been holding her in my arms for naps for two months now!  The last week or so she will lie down on the bed with me and fall asleep nursing.   I dont want to create a sleep association but right now I will do anything to get her the sleep she needs.  Going to tackle it all soon enough but her night sleep is just getting back to normal so I am letting things settle for now.

Good luck!  I know its frustrating!
