Natural Birth

Prepping for a home birth how early?

Well today I've got a little bit of time on my hands and was wondering if it's too early to start making the nest so to speak for my planned homebirth.  I'm thinking of double making the bed and putting all the essentials into cute little baskets/ containers for when the time comes.  That way I can be all ready but I'm wondering if another month or so of plastic under the sheets will be annoying.  This is my first homebirth so I'm not sure how soon to start setting up.  Can anyone give advice?  My labors are usually very fast (2-4 hrs or so) so I'd rather be prepared but don't want to go overboard either.

  • I don't think its too early to start getting ready. I would not make the bed just yet Bc the plastic would make me sweat, but putting together the supplies would be helpful I think. GL!

I would be waiting as long as possible for the plastic sheets. I know I gathered everything together at 36 weeks, because that's when I had my home visit and also the point at which I'd be able to birth at home if I went into labor. There's no harm in prepping early but I found it nice to have projects to keep busy with towards the end.

    All of this.

  • My midwife wants you to have all supplies by week 36 or 37. We just keep them in a big plastic tub. The ones that can't go in early (like the crockpot) are a snap to grab once labor starts.

DH  changes the bed and puts a set of clean sheets, a plastic sheet, and then another set of sheets once I say it's the real deal. It takes 2 seconds.

Even with my very fast second labor (2 hours from me deciding it was the real thing) we had plenty of time to get ready.

  • I wouldn't bother prepping the bed until you're at or past the date when your MW will be able to attend the birth.  I know the HB MW I talked to said I had to be 37wks in order to have her attend a HB.

And if you did it now at 34 weeks you'd have to do it again when you change the sheets and I'm guessing that's at least once between now and your MWs cut off?

I'd go ahead and gather the stuff though and stash it in bag/box under the bed? One less thing to think about.

  • You'll want everything in place before 36 or 37 weeks, the cut off for when you'd be able to have a home birth. I'm putting our plastic sheet on tonight just in case my water were to break early even though we couldn't have a home birth until next week.

However, you could get your car seat installed, and a bag for you and baby for in case you have to transfer to the hospital, you need these ready too. Get your car seat installed now and see if your local fire or police dept will check that it is installed properly for you. Our firehouse invites people to have their carseats checked every Friday so we're going this week to make sure it's done right.

  • Thanks ladies for all you advice.  I set up the birthing box and held off on the bed till later on as what you ladies said makes a lot of sense.  It's always nice to get some tips from those who have BTDT.

  • My situation was not typical but I prepped pretty early and when my water broke at 34w3d in addition to everything else (NICU, coming home before baby) I had to pack up all the HB supplies.  I cried.  This time I'm not doing anything before 36 weeks and not making up the bed, washing receiving blankets, etc. until 37 weeks on the dot.
