My best friend is planning my baby shower and asked me to give her some ideas of some games I'd like. I've only been to one baby shower before and there wasn't any games. So I'm wondering:
do most people even like baby shower games?
how many games do people usually do?
what kinds of prizes do people receive if they win the game?
what game(s) have you enjoyed in the past?
Re: Shower games
Baby shower games are really a "take it or leave it" aspect of a shower. I guess a few are fun, but most are over done, and I, for one, don't like being told what to do. Haha! I'm an adult, I can amuse myself with idle chatter.
That being said, I did a game for my SIL's shower that was a pretty big hit. Basically everyone had to match the picture of a celebrity with their outrageous baby names. It was a lot of fun, since I included some of the older celebrities, along with new ones (Snookie, Kourtney). Everyone said they really loved it.
As prizes, I picked up things like scented candles, a walmart gift card ($5), etc, etc. Basically, pick a price point and find useful things, or things you wouldn't mind "winning".

My sister didn't plan a lot of games for my shower. There was a fun one, though...
She had a little decorative pacifier on a ribbon that people had to wear around their necks. Anytime you caught someone saying baby or butterfly (she decorated with a lot of those) you got to take their necklace. At the end, whoever had the most necklaces won a prize.
There were some little girls at the shower who LOVED this. They kept trying to get the adults to slip up. The adults kept trying to get the adults to slip up! It was great when my super competitive cousin lost all hers to one of the kids.
I'd also stick with prizes like the PP mentioned. $5 gift cards, candles, pretty note pads, etc.
I'm not a huge fan of games, but if there will be a lot of guests who don't know each other, it can be nice to have something to do if you run out of idle chit chat. The ones where you match celebrity names to their baby names or nursery rhyme lyrics to the title are good, and I also like baby bingo while opening presents.
Joy's ideas with the baby names and different languages above sound cute, too!
What I hate are things where you're running around or smelling diapers...something nice and quiet you can do while you eat cake is best, IMO.
This is a little repetitive, but we had just 2 games at my shower. First was the baby one. Everyone got a clothespin (tiny pastel ones I guess from Party City or something) and if someone caught you saying baby they stole your pin. My aunt got physical on it--crazy! The best part was the people who lost pins early who kept saying "baby" to make everyone else jump.
The other game was guess the birth date/time/sex/weight/length.
Prizes were scented candles (which I still have several of for the winner of the second game).
Playing was optional and most of the time was spent mingling, eating and opening presents.
I am also one of those weirdos (except in my circle) that likes shower games...except I don't like the ones where I have to smell, taste or drink anything. I personally don't like the celebraty baby game because I don't watch a lot of TV and don't know who even has babies. LOL I think it would work for a younger group though. I've only been to two showers that didn't have some type of game or activity and they were b-o-r-i-n-g. Most of the people I personally know DO like shower games...but the majority on here don't (or at least say they don't).
Depending on the length of the game...I would do 2...maybe 3. It also depends on how many people there are. I just hosted a shower with 40 people and we had 3 games but the longest game took maybe 15 minutes from start (directions) to finish (opened the box). It was a "break the ice" type of game. I wrapped a wrist corsage of two flowers in a box with about 15 sheets of different colored tissue paper. I told the guests that inside the box was a pair of bloomers (hence two flowers) and whoever opened the box at the end had to wear the bloomers for the rest of the shower. The box was passed as music played and when the music stopped whoever had the box took off 1 layer of tissue. The box was like a hot potato (I wrapped the corsage knowing this would happen...so lots of tissue around the actual corsage box). The one who took off the last piece of tissue was happily surprised to have a wrist corsage to wear instead of a pair of old maid underwear. lol
I like the word baby in different languages matching game (we did something similar at our Christmas party with a related word). Also, matching names with their meanings.
If I am hosting for a group that haven't been to any of the showers I've hosted I do the one where MTB takes a tray filled with baby items around the room and the guests gets a few seconds to look it over. The MTB leaves and the room and the hostess asks questions about the MTB (what color dress did she have on, did she have any hair accessories, any nail polish, what color, etc). The guests are usually so focused on the tray they don't pay much attention to the MTB.
You can also use a few pair of new socks and put a small baby related item in each sock and tie the end. Number the socks. The guests are given a few seconds to feel the item and then write down what they think it is. You have to add some haird ones...like the finger toothbrush or nursing pad.
The prize that has gone over the best are scratch off lottery tickets. Everyone has loved them and one woman won $400! I usually gave 5 for each prize. $5 gift cards to varioius places are good, too.
