Transvaginal Ultrasound

I'm really nervous about having a transvaginal ultrasound done. Is there anyone that's had one that can talk me through what it's going to be like???

Thanks!

Re: Transvaginal Ultrasound

  • you'll lay on your back and the doc will have you put your feet in stirrups (like for a pap) and he'll put lube on the probe and insert it into your vagina. To me it was uncomfortable at first just because it was something different going in there and its hard. The end has a camera on it which transmits the pic to the us machine. The only part that kind of, and by kind of I mean it was a twinge of pain and nothing that threw me over the edge, is when he would have to look to the far right or far left. It just pushes on your vaginal wall in a weird way.

Its nothing to be nervous about. IMO its easier than getting a pap done and wayyy less uncomfortable.

  • I've always put it in myself, which makes me feel much better. My most recent one was with a male tech, he had a female coworker come in.

  • I have had two. The office I go to asks you to guide in the wand. It's a little uncomfortable at times bc they may press on your stomach, but it's less terrible than a Pap in my opinion! It's so amazing to see the little one try to relax!
  • As others have said, it really isn't bad. It is slimmer than what got you pregnant in the first place, I can pretty much guarantee. It is maybe a little awkward, but once you can see your baby on the screen, you won't care at all. I'd let them leave that thing in there all day if I could keep seeing my baby!

  • It's really not bad at all. It's been a difficult journey for me and hubby and I have had lots of ultrasounds in the last year. We refer to the trans vag as the dildo cam. Brings a little humor to a sometimes anxious time....

    You'll be fine. Just relax!
  • It's not bad at all! I've had a TON of them over the course of my fertility treatment, you just put your feet up in stirrups and they insert the u/s probe into you. It's no biggie!

I figure we're all going to have plenty of doctors all up in our business throughout pregnancy and childbirth, so may as well get used to it now!

DEAD. I hope its slimmer than what got her pregnant... if not man, I'm sorry!

  • I didn't read the previous comments, but I had one at 8.5 weeks and it was easy.  The wand really just sits at the very edge of the vagina.  WAY WAY WAY less invasive than say the speculum they use during annuals.  No pain whatsoever.

Ditto that... and why was the fact that it is hard make it a little uncomfortable? was SO's penis not 'hard'?  0_o

  • Well it's nicknamed the "dildo cam" so that should tell ya right there. My tech walked me though the steps. It wasn't bad at all.

  • You'll want a cigarette afterwards, but because your pregnant you'll have to settle for a stick of gum.

  • I have had 5 lifetime. Anyways I layed on a table with a sheet over me. They placed a pillow under my bottom. I had to bend my knees but didn't have to have stirrups. Then the probe was inserted. No biggie you will be fine.

  • You'll be ok. I had one today. As said before, it's definitely not as bad as a pap. There was a little more probing for me because I got some fibroids that the tech was trying to see past. But that didn't hurt. It was just a little uncomfortable. But when I saw and heard that heartbeat I forgot all about the uncomfortable feeling.
  • I've had more than I can count and more action with one than with DH.  Just relax.  It isn't the bad. A little uncomfortable at times as they are trying to find things.
