To ladies who've already had their steroid injections...

I just got my Rx for the two steroid injections I'm to get at 32 weeks and the nurse told me I could have DH give them to me or I could come to the office to get it.

Do the steroid injections burn at all? We used injectables to get pregnant and needles don't bother me but DH doesn't like them at all (he's a passer outer when it comes to needles) but he did suck it up a few times to give me my injections because he "thought" they didn't hurt.

I don't want to run the risk of yelling "OW!" if they burn because then he will feel awful. So, did your injection make you want to run away or was it just another pregnancy pain to deal with?

Re: To ladies who've already had their steroid injections...

  • They hurt and burn a lot. I still have a bruse on each hip from the shots and I got my first shot on Wednesday. It helps to numb the area with ice first and they burn for a while after you get them.

  • This is the first I've heard of steroid injections.  Are they standard, or do you just get them to combat a particular issue?

They are to help mature the baby's lungs faster when there is a threat of preterm delivery. I got them because I went into preterm labor Wednesday.

Interesting. I am at risk for pre-term labor as well, due to my bicornuate uterus. I have an appointment tomorrow and am going to discuss with my doctor the possibility of needing steroid injections. Thank you for posting this!

  • Mine didn't really hurt much at all... The first dose I got, the nurse pinched the area before injecting me, and I didn't even feel it.  The second one hurt a bit more, but ot like an actual pain feeling.  I also don't remember them burning either.  I did get mine in my butt cheeks though :)

  • Alright, well DH it is then. Hopefully the needle isn't too much larger than before or he might pass out just looking at it (sigh). I'll be very happy to spare the hour round trip plus wait time to make the OB nurse do it.

    Thanks ladies!

  • I had mine given to me at the hospital between 28-29 weeks due to preterm labor. They both really hurt a lot!! Not the actual shot itself, but I guess the liquid is so thick that when it's injected it burns and is quite painful. I still have a bruise from the first shot (it's been 11 days), a different nurse administered the second shot and she massaged the area after injecting the steroid and I didn't get a bruise on that side.
