How do you go out?

Ever since DS has started walking, he hates sitting in the stroller for more than 15 minutes. And if I stop the stroller, forget it, he is twisting and turn to get out. I can't be the only mom out there that this is happening to! He throws a fit if he can't get out, and if I let him out, he is all over the place (and isn't a great walker yet). Then, if I pick him up to leave, he throws a temper tantrum. So, what do you all do? Any suggestions?

  • No words of wisdom here.  I quit going to the mall for this reason.  DD hates the stroller lately.  Thankfully she tolerates the shopping cart at the grocery store if i give her some food item to hold or a fake list.

  • Yep we had the same issues today at the fair. He is a great walker but he's fast and he darts.  I tried to walk next to him while holding his hand but that only worked for a little while. He'd try to go in a different direction and would throw a fit if I wanted him to go somewhere else.  And then throw an even bigger tantrum if I picked him up. Toys used to work but not so much anymore.  He just throws them out of the stroller.  Unfortunately I think its just a phase. Hopefully a short one lol.

  • We are in the same boat. I usually let him walk until his legs get tired, then he's okay in the stroller. When he wants to go in a different direction than he's supposed to, I pick him up and carry him for a few feet and face him in the direction where I want him to go. That works sometimes ;-)

He's still great in a grocery cart! He doesn't need any distractions there...he turns around in his little seat and looks at everything!

  • The mall is a combination of Ergo and her walking.

The grocery store is the BOB or walking. She gets to walk as long as she holds my hand.

Sure tantrums have happened but this is a great time to start teaching limits in public. By 18 months, with practice, it will be a lot easier.

  • DS dislikes the stroller (he puts up with it while we're moving, but hold still and he wants out!) but HATES the shopping cart these days. Most of the time he is okay with being held (or a being held/walking combination) so we just take quick trips!

DS went through a stage where he wanted to run randomly by himself all over, and we basically just didn't go out - and if we had to, I held DS while he screamed. : P Thankfully it only lasted a few weeks.

  • We got our son a harness.  It looks like a little monkey backpack and he LOVES it. He knows once the monkey comes  out he gets to get down and run.  Some people say, "OMG you can't restrain your child like that" but in my opinion, it's no different than restraining them in a stroller or carrier.  Plus, we're both much happier with it!

  • To avoid the toy throw, we put the toys on a nuk/paci holder then clipped it to the fabric on the stroller - never had to worry about lost toys plus it becomes a game where they'll pull it up to fip/toss them off...  So far so good!

Do you have a link? My parents had a leash for me, I don't think it's a bad thing. C loves to walk, but will not hold our hands or go where we ask him so I think something like this would be great.

Here's the link, we got it at Target.
