Possible Breech...

Went in for my weekly check up, 35+6 weeks, and the midwife said it was weird she got the heartbeat from near my sternum (like to the right a bit) and felt my abdomen and said more mass was higher than lower so she figured the baby may be breeched.

She gave me a half-assed ultrasound, which I am not complaining cause I love them, just she didn't know how to use it and said it would just be a peek so she could try and see if she was right or not.. but in the end couldn't tell, lol. At least I got to see somewhat of a spine!

I am kinda scared cause she said when I come back to get the ultrasound again from someone who knows how to do it and if he is breech then they would try to do version and talk about what else I could do. If I go into labor before hand and they do an ultrasound and he is breech then it would be an automatic c-section.

Also, she checked my cervix and it is closed but softening up.. she said she didn't feel anything pushing against it either, but it sure does feel like someone took a crowbar and played golf with it.

Any of you have had a breech baby turn late? She told me when he does turn, it will hurt. So I am looking forward to that...

  • Sorry, but she should be able to tell just by feeling your belly and especially after using an ultrasound machine.  Has she delivered many babies?

  • Look into spinning babies and a chiropractor that is trained in the Webster technique.

She thought she saw the head down, which is why I am going back for an ultrasound with a sonographer. She is one of the senior midwife (don't know if there is a special name for that) but I am very small for how many weeks I am and this baby looks long. Like I have been asked over and over again by the technicians who take my weight if I am sure I am the right week, it is quite funny. My uterus height is perfect as well as the baby had a growth scan in week 22 and was doing fine.

So all I know is the baby could be so curled up in such a small area that it is probably hard to tell. Just what I think.

I would recommend researching the version before agreeing to that.  My baby is breech and my doctor did not think it was a good option for me as a FTM, basically because it can cause stress for the baby and potentially lead to an emergency c/s.  I have also heard the version can be painful for mom.  As for a more natural flip, I'm not sure it will really hurt when (if) the baby turns.  At less than 36 weeks, you may still have plenty of room for your LO to turn -- it might feel weird, but not necessarily painful, from what I have read and heard.

There have been several posts in the past few days on methods for encouraging a breech baby to turn, if you're interested in that.  In some of them, I think other March moms talked about their babies turning.

Yeah, I am looking into other techniques. I cannot afford a chiropractor right now and I do not think this insurance my husband has covers things like that. I am not worried that it would be painful as much, a few weeks back it looked as though the baby was trying to sit up in my stomach and the only reason why I freaked out was because I have seen too many movies where the aliens or monsters look the same when coming out of someone... and it didn't end well lol. I know silly, but hey.

I am going to wait a little until I have an ultrasound again before I do anything though, no point in stressing much about it unless I knew for sure, just like to know the options if it does end up being just that. But like I said, she wasn't so sure... so I am not giving my hopes up.

  • I used to be a March mama with a breach baby (delivered DS 11 hours after my ECV, as I was one of the <5% where the version triggers labor). Found out I was breach at 36w6days and they flipped him at 37w1d. I really wanted to try and deliver vaginally so we agreed to try an ECV (have a 22month old to chase after). Every time someone was asking me about how far along I was to book the procedure, and even to confirm before they did the procedure, they asked if this was my 2nd baby. I swear I was asked this question 6 times in 2 days. Honestly I think that is the only reason they agreed to do it, it's MUCH more successful if your uterus has already been stretched out once.

From personal experience, it's no walk in the park. It's about as painful as a full on labor contraction for 4 minutes, as someone is literally pushing as hard on your tummy as possible to try and flip the baby, all the while telling you to just breath though it and relax!

If it was my first baby, I don't think it would even have been an option for me. Even as it was with being my 2nd, there was only a 50% chance for success. Good luck to you, I'd do lots of research about this and do what you are comfortable with, but know the odds are really not in your favor being your 1st.

  • I had a breech baby that turned at 38 weeks then back to breech again at 39 weeks, it did not hurt at all. I'm having a csection tomorrow.

  • My baby has been breech for over a month now. I am now 36 weeks. Whenever I have a braxton hicks contraction, I can feel his whole body, and its pretty obvious where the head is, and I can feel his feet dancing on my bladder.  My OB said she would not do version. In her opinion, there is a reason baby is breech, usually related to mother's anatomy or uterus. Version does carry risks, such as placental abruption, the cord getting around baby's neck and causing distress to baby. Frankly, I am glad she doesn't want to try. I go back to the doctor tomorrow to see what baby's position is, but I can still feel his head under my ribs so I am fairly certain he is still breech. He has tried to turn several times without success, and each time has been fairly uncomfortable, and sometimes painful. All that being said, some people have recommended a position to try to get him into vertex position. Their recommendation has been to get on all fours, and lean forward, to let gravity move baby. It hasn't worked for me, but supposedly its a popular recommendation by some midwives. Good luck!
