Dresser vs. Changing Table

Question for y'all... Are you getting a dresser with a changing pad on top? Or a changing table? Or nothing? My sister told me not to waste my money on a dresser since they never changed their baby there, and they ended up hanging all the clothes up. But I nanny a 7 month old and I only ever change her on the pad on top of the dresser, and they keep her clothes in the dresser. So I'm not sure what to do! Advice?

Re: Dresser vs. Changing Table

  • We did a vintage dresser with a pad on top.  We still use e dresser in Arden's room now.

  • Sweet, thanks lady! :
  • I'm debating the same thing. I want some thing long term so I figure a dresser is the way to go, but I also wonder if the height is going to work or if the changing table would be ideal. Hope you get some good advice!
  • I use a dresser with a pad on top. I like the height of the dresser to change the babies on. If you always do it on the floor then you have to bend over.
  • I always use a dresser with a pad on top and the majority of his clothes are in the dresser. I think he will use the closet as he gets older.

Dresser and then baby has a dresser throughout childhood, including after the changing pad is gone. I also HATE hanging up clothes so everything is folded except his nice dress clothes.

Same here! We will keep the same furniture sets for a while for dd and new baby.
  • I think changing tables are a waste of money. You only use them for a short period of time and they're expensive. I guess I am ghetto but I always changed my daughter on the floor. I would spend money on a good dresser and that way he or she will have it for a long time. Just put changing pad on top.

  • We used a dresser with changing pad for dd she is 19'months she is 19 months and we still use the changing pad on top. I can't imagine hanging up every item unless there is no space for a dresser.

  • We are doing a changing pad on top of a dresser.

All of our furniture has been family furniture that I used when I was younger or are family heirlooms.  With DS, we had the crib, changing table and chest of drawers.  His chest of drawers matches his twin bed and he currently uses it in his room.  This go-round we have my great-grandparents bedroom set that have been in our guest room.  We are doing a combination guest room and nursery, so the crib is coming out of the attic and we are using the top of the dresser from the set for changing table and baby clothing.  Changing table is staying up there.

  • We will definitely buy a dresser and put a changing pad on top. We are going to cloth diaper and so for the first two drawers We will have diapers and the rest clothes. I just feel like changing tables are a waste of ! I've checked target for dressers and changing tables and some are only like 50 bucks more for a complete dresser so why be stuck with a changing table? I think a dresser you can use forever! Even if its not just for your child.

  • We used a dresser and put a changing pad on top. DS room is small and there really wasn't enough room for both a dresser and a changing table. I honestly prefer a dresser to the closet for clothes. While we store clothes in both, I just HATE hanging up clothes...it's the chore I hate the most. The dresser was also good for storing burb cloths, blankets and bibs. I've heard a lot of people say that their LO's "outgrew" the changing table too and it was just too small to accommodate their growng baby/toddler after a while. Just something to think about...

  • We are doing a changing pad on top of dresser. We are passing our childhood dressers and armoire to our baby and getting new furniture for us. Yes, we've been using our childhood furniture all this time in the 10 years we've been married!! But I love that we both loved our furniture and want to pass it on to our LO. And we never had enough money to get a bedroom set that we both loved, so now it works out for both us and the baby!
  • We have a changing table with baskets to keep like socks and stuff in and hang everything else. The room is kind of small so as he/she gets bigger I'd rather have the room for toys.
  • We have a dresser with the pad on top and it worked great for our little guy. Will be using for this LO as well

  • We use the dresser for everything. Once he got mobile, I threw the change pad on the floor. I don't like change tables. They seem single purpose and kind of silly to spend money on.
  • Dresser with changing pad on top. Still using it 2.5 years later. We got the 8 drawer hemnes from Ikea, and it's a perfect height.

  • We'll be using a dresser with a changing pad on top. We had a dresser already, so rather than buy something new, it'll just get used for the baby. I'll probably do a mixture of hanging clothes and putting some (as well as other items) in the drawers.

same here for both dd and DS.

  • Same at others said, dresser with changing pad is the way to go. I also got an additional pad that I keep downstairs and throw down whenever/wherever we need it. I end up using that one way more.

  • We had a regular 'ol dresser with a changing pad on top. (Still have, but she's a different room now with a chest of drawers because it fits better, the new LO will get the original dresser.)

Some of her things were hung, others were in the drawers. We just pulled out what we needed prior to plopping her onto the dresser.

  • We have a dresser and will do a pad on top. I also know that lots of diaper changes will take place on the bed/couch/floor.
