Blankets in crib

So when do you plan on having Lo sleep with a blanket and any particular one or size?

K still uses a sleep sack and since she walks all over I figure I need to change soon though know a blanket won't stay on her and also still worry about safety issues and her getting tangled up

Re: Blankets in crib

  • DD has had a blanket since November. Just one I crocheted for her before she was born. No issues.

  • I am still using the sack too. I think I am going to stick with them until DD doesn't fit in them anymore. She won't stay under a blanket, and she doesn't wear them outside of in bed, so they don't affect her locomotion.

  • Well we had NEVER used blankets with LO in his crib...just never. My parents watch LO during the day and everyday I would get home and there would forever be a baby blanket in his crib. DS is always sick and my dad lectured me about not putting him down with a blanket and blah blah blah. So DH and I got into an argument and well, I let my dad win and I gave him a blanket. Turns out, he really enjoys it because its soft and he likes to cuddle with it. I was using the swaddle blankets, but now I just use the fleece/minky baby blankets with the satin edging. He loves it, and he doesnt get twisted in them b/c they're too thick and small.
  • I cover DS with a crocheted blanket for naps - I check on him pretty frequently when he's napping so I don't worry about it too much.  At night, he sleeps in footed pajamas with the heater going if it's cold so I don't use a blanket then.  Not sure when I'll start using one at night..

  • Probably not until he's in a toddler bed. I like the sleep sacks, they make them with feet holes for when they are walking and we are just about ready to go up a size. He moves too much for a blanket to cover him all night so it would be pointless. The times I've given him a lovey type blanket at naps he just stares at it like WTF are you doing in my crib until he tosses it out.

This exactly. I really just find the sleepsacks more convenient. We have the ones with the feet and they've worked out great, especially if I decide to get him pjs early so he can still move around and play until we're ready to wind down. I have no particular issue with blankets except that they're useless for a baby that moves around like he does. It works much better for us to strap the blanket right to him!

  • We dress DD in a long sleeve onesie and fleece pjs. Then we cover her with a light blanket. She usually kicks it off by morning or it is wrapped around her legs.

Are you using cotton or fleece footed sleep sacks? I'm thinking about just doing cotton ones since summer is right around the corner.

  • DD's had a blanket (as well as a folded blanket as a pillow) for at least 4 months already. It's never been an issue, other than she always kicks it off :)

  • Both my girls use sleep sacks and blankets. DD1 is in a big bed and has a sleep sack with foot holes, but she also has a full bedding set on her bed and a couple other blankets. DD2 is in the crib and has the sleep sack without the foot holes. She is walking in it no problems, and has been for about 4 months. She also sleeps with a small fleece-y baby blanket. Our house is cold and they like to be bundled, they always sleep better that way.

Fleece right now but I'm holding off on buying more until the seasons change for the same reason because we may need to change sizes by that time. The ones with the footholes run differently because I think the size is based on the sack without footholes. For example, my son is almost getting ready to bust out of his 12-18 month sacks without feet (size large in Halo) but the foothole ones are perfect in the same size right now. When he stands, the sack part just barely skims the floor and he's just under 34 inches tall.

  • I've covered Olivia with a blanket every night all winter.  She can roll, she can walk, I'm not concerned about a blanket.

My son is really tall too and we're having the same issue with the large Halo ones. Good to know about the foothole sizing, thanks!

  • DS has had a blanket since he was 3 weeks old, when we stopped swaddling. He has several different kinds but his favorite is this one.

It's usually kicked to the end of the crib in the morning though.

  • My LO just started sleeping with a blanket this past week. No problems!

We co-sleep.. he has always had a sheet or blankets with no problem at all.  Usually sleeps in a footed onesie or footless with socks because he has a habit of sleeping along the headboard  with his butt in someone's face nowadays ...so have to make sure he is warm if not under the covers.
