Birthday Cake at Hospital

Side vent: I think they should sell single slices of costco birthday cake for pregnant ladies. I want cake, but I only a piece.

Also, I told DH when the baby is born I would like to have a cake at the hospital, because it is the baby's birthday. That way if/when the grandparents come to visit, they can have some cake too. If it is big enough, we could share with the nurses.

He thought my idea sounded weird.

Thoughts?

Re: Birthday Cake at Hospital

  • Excellent! I think I will have DH buy one of those small 3 inch cakes for me with whipped topping since by the time I have baby I am going to be dying for an overdose of sugar since I can't eat it now.

ETA: I just want to eat it. I have never heard about the birthday thing.

DH and I plan on getting a birthday cake for the new baby. My parents will serve it to our older kids after their visit.

  • I think it sounds like a big messy pain in the butt. lol
  • I think it's sweet! We'll do birthday cookies so we can share with the nurses :)

  • I love the idea of something to share with the nurses and visitors. I also love the idea of a mini cake just for me, lol
  • I love the idea of cake on the actually birthday!! : also nice to have something for your guests and the staff which I hear help out so much!!
  • Um, I'm always for cake. I've had some friends do a small 'birthday' cake or cupcakes in the hospital. It's NBD, just food, like someone bringing you snacks or dinner.

Our local grocery chain sells personal slices for $2...I might have gotten two yesterday. Maybe. :)

  • Our local hospital gives you a mini birthday cake with your 1st dinner after the baby is born. They give mom and dad a celebratory dinner. My friend recently had her baby and when I saw their celebratory dinner/cake I thought that was so cool of the hospital :
  • I love this idea!! Plus, as a nurse myself, I can tell you we always love and welcome treats!!

At the hospital my friend delivered at, they did this...it was a really sweet gesture I thought. You should check with the hospital or if you know someone who delivered there and see if they do it.

  • I'm the oldest of five kids, and we always decorated a cake to take to the hospital when we met the new baby. It was a nice way for us to feel like we had an important job.

When DD was born, her name was a surprise, so we gave my sister a sealed envelope with a card saying that her cake should say, "Happy Birthday, Amalia." That's how we announced her name to everyone.

  • I've heard of doing this and putting a big 0 candle in the cake. I decided awhile ago that I want to do this, but maybe with a cupcake. I'd also have extra cupcakes for visitors. I just love the idea of getting a picture of the baby with his/her birth day cupcake.

  • What a great idea!! I may steal it from you. It's a great point, why don't we celebrate on the original birthday? And I'm sure the nurses will be happy, I mean who doesn't love a little treat and to be included in those types of things. It's a perfect idea if you ask me and not just because I love cake!
  • I've actually heard of people doing this as tradition in there family. I think it's a cute idea and if you want to do it you should go for it. If your husband isn't on board with it because he thinks it's weird it's for baby's birthday you could just say it's in celebration of the birth of the baby. I know it's the same thing but the wording kinda changes up the meaning a little maybe. Maybe he pictures giving the kid a birthday rather than celebrating the birth. You know?

  • I think it is weird too.  I mean, how long is this cake going to be sitting around for multiple visitors to actually enjoy it?  yuck.  And also, no one is going to want old grocery store cake when there is a new baby to hold.

  • I've had some friends do cupcakes. That may be less messy and easier to share. I think it's a fun idea.
