Intro. And work dilemma!

Hello all,
I'm Nelly and my bf of 5ys is Tim. We are expecting our first child which wasn't planned! I'm 22 and he's 22 in August. Found out we were expecting while living alone in another cityhappened when I came for Christmas vacay!. We decided it was best to move back home where I'd be closer to him and family. Found a job before moving and I've been there for 3wks.
I'm lost as to what to do and I'm afraid when I tell them I won't have a job any longerdental assistant. I'm already starting to show so I'm afraid the plan of waiting after probation will back fire as they'll find out before!!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Ps. Sorry for the lengthiness. First time posting :s

Re: Intro. And work dilemma!

  • Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Not sure where you are from but I am in Canada and labour laws here state that a woman cannot be fired, laid off, etc. because of pregnancy.

An employer may not dismiss, suspend, lay off, demote or discipline an employee because she is pregnant or has applied for or intends to apply for maternity or parental leave, maternity-related reassignment or leave or modification of her job functions.

Of course, in reality, labour laws are not always followed by all employers (whether legal or not).

Try not to worry about it too much (I know, easier said than done) and focus on demonstrating to your supervisors, co-workers, etc. how exemplary of an employee you are. If you do not give your supervisor any other grounds for dismissal, than it is unlikely you will be terminated strictly from being pregnant.

Regarding waiting until your probation is over until you announce your pregnancy....some employers do not like this and prefer honesty up front. However, you know your boss much better than anyone here on this board and need decide what's best. Perhaps there is a co-worker who you can trust that could provide some valuable input on the situation.

Good luck to you...I hope it all works out!

  • I am in Canada as well.
Thank you very much that answers a lot of my questions, even the unasked ones!
I am considering speaking to a coworker I can trust and so I'm keeping an eye out of who that is.
    Thanks again.

  • given that you are protected by labor laws I would tell your direct supivisor asap. I know I had major issues with M/S and being tired that would have made work life very hard if my manager didn't know.. I didn't tell my other co-workers until they asked if I was OK becuase of the amount of sick time I had to take.
  • Thank you.
I've decided I will inform my office manager on April first which will put me at 16wks with still a month to go on my probation. So I hope they won't feel I'm being dishonest as I haven't even had an u/s yet so it still seems unreal to me.
