bath toys

Ok.  I'm hating on bath toys right now.

I try to clean them, they seem to always get that black colored mold/mildew on them.  The squirt toys will squirt out black stuff even after I've repeatedly tried to clean.

What do you do with bath toys after bath?  What do you clean them with?  Do you not use those toys anymore?  I'm seriously considering just tossing all of them and keeping just a few cups and foam letters.

Re: bath toys

  • I don't use them anymore for that reason. Bath time is pretty boring at our house.

  • Huh.  We've never had the mold.  I always rinse them off and then prop them so they dry out.

Have you tried to clean them with a bleach/water combo?

  • I read Pinterest, you should hot glue the holes, that way the water doesn't get in. :)

  • Yep, our bath squeak toys got terribly moldy. When we moved we got rid of all bath toys. Now they just entertain each other in the bath. Works so much better for everyone.

I have never had a mold issue either.  We have a mesh bag that hangs on the back of the shower. We rinse the toys and put them in the bag.  They always seem clean, no slime or mold.  Maybe it depends on whether you have city water or well water?  We have city.

Hmm I have everything that you have for our bath toys but I have well water and they never get moldy either. We never do close the bathroom door so maybe that helps to keep air circulating

  • Yea! We had to get rid of the squirters for the same reason.

I just got a couple of boats from the dollar bin at Target and this bath soup thing. They have similar sets with numbers/letters at walmart for like $5. I wouldn't spend $13 on this sht, but she likes it.

  • I actually just got frustrated and tossed them.

They didn't have mold on the outside- its on the inside, probably due to excess water left in there!

We are sticking to non squirting bath toys!

  • We have the Boon Frog Pod. I have never had a problem with mold, mildew, or gross growth of any kind. Actually, I've never even washed the bath toys. Is that gross? :)

I wonder if it's because of the water? I think we have hard water here, and we do rinse the toys every night/ dry them out. They still get all gooky after a while.

  • For squirt toys you can put a dab of hot glue on the ends of new ones and it keeps water from getting in.  Thus ending the funk.  :)

  • I have pretty hard well water that high in some other minerals and I've never had this problem.

I do religiously squirt the water of the toys after every bath though. Rubes does it for me and it's like a game. I have a mesh bag.

I think what helps us is good air circulation. Our fans are pretty much always on or at least for a good while after bath and I leave the door open all of the time when someone's not in it.

  • I've never had that problem either. I always scoop mine out and put them in the sink to air/drip dry. But we don't have a lot either, maybe 10 hard plastic toys.
