Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Baby Feeding Dogs

I have a nearly 9 month old who sometimes loves her solids. We do BLW so she gets a mixture of "adult" foods and purees that she mostly feeds herself.

The problem is we also have a great dane/lab mix who is very well behaved but is getting fat off LO leavings.

Part of this is my fault- early on in the process I would let the dog do the first clean through after a meal- just so I didn't have to sweep and toss all the excess food. Then I'd scrub everything down while LO played with the dog.

I stopped doing this to try and curb the problem (and the dog's waist) but now that LO likes to throw things, she has started throwing her food off the table and to the dog. I've tried keeping the dog out of the room, but LO will throw the food down and look for the dog and then get distracted and stop eating all together when she doesn't see "her" dog there. Then I start cleaning up and 30 minutes later she's hungry again!

The worst is at my mother's house. They have these mini poodle things and they swarm her like sharks! and my mother won't put them out while we eat because she doesn't like to hear them "cry".

I'm sure it's just a phase that she will out grow, but I wondered if anyone had any better ideas?

Re: Baby Feeding Dogs

  • My LO accidentally solved this problem for me when I started letting her have her sippy cup full of water at meals. It was just as likely she was going to chuck the cup off as she is to chuck food off, so the dogs don't like to come over near her tray anymore when she is in it. They've both been walloped by the cup a few times.

  • Probably not the right solution but I stopped giving our dog full servings of his food. I also correct dd when she throws her food but I figure I have to pick my battles and I don't have the energy to care right now. I just make sure dd doesn't throw down anything poisonous grapes, onion, avocado, etc.

  • DS does this so I have started putting him down when he does it.  Usually he is at the end of his feeding when it happens but I am hoping he will learn he can't feed the dog.

  • Remove the dog from the situation during mealtimes request the other dogs be put in a separate spot when visiting. Crates are a lifesaver and gives the dog a safe zone. Make it a positive experience for your dog by treating him or her with a frozen peanut butter, filled Kong, fat free in your dog's case, lol...

Nipping the situation in the bud before it starts will save you from a whole mess of problems in the future. And your lo is still really too young to comprehend it isn't okay to feed the dog. That wonderweek doesn't hit for awhile. GL
  • I agree with the others. My son is 20mo and has been throwing food for awhile now. Our kitchen is tile, but the adjoining living room is carpet, so our dogs know they have to stay on the carpet during meal times. They wait right at the edge for clean-up, but now I do a quick sweep of the floor so they don't scramble to get the leftovers (preventing weight gain). This "scramble" is what my LO thinks is so funny, even though it happens after he is done eating, so I try to avoid letting the dogs get any scraps.

After he throws the food once, I remind him that the food is for him, not the dogs. If he does it again, I put him down and we try meal time again in another 15min or so. I haven't had to repeat that more than once.

They will eventually get it.. it's frustrating, but I'm hoping feeding the dogs will become boring.

  • Yep mine too.

I have a gate that seperates the kitchen from the other room so my dogs get to hang out on the other side of the kitchen while my little food slinger goes to town.  dogs get to come in and hoover up the kitchen after the feeding frenze.

This made me LOL. I think of small dogs the same way....for some reason i just dont see them as "dogs"!
