Witching Hour

Is anyones LO still having a really fussy period in the evening?? DD has recently been having a really hard time with fussiness and general unhappiness from 5-7pm, when we start our bedtime routine. I have tried moving up bedtime and eliminating anything which might over stimulate her but it just seems to be her thing right now. Its just like how she was during this time of day as a newborn!

If you have thing going on too, any tips for soothing LO? Or maintaining ones sanity while trying to cook dinner?! So far food, a snack, story, cuddles, singing, laughing... all not helping!

Re: Witching Hour

  • Evening isn't a great time for DD. She's pretty fussy and will cry if she's not being held. I think a lot of it has to do with being exhausted from daycare, but it's still the case on my days off. Today I was off and I just wore her in the Ergo from 4:30 - 6:00 because she would cry if I put her down.

The Ergo is my go to when DD is fussy. She usually calms right down and is happy to watch while I make dinner, do laundy, whatever. If that doesn't work I just nurse her, after the boob she's usually content for at least 10 minutes so I can start dinner : )

  • I was just thinking the same thing today! Witching hour is still here! It seems a lot better when DS gets a third nap in, but that just doesn't always happen. I admit, I usually hand him off to DH for a few minutes when he gets home from work at 4:30 so that I can get a small break from the crankiness.

  • It looks like I am in good company!

I am trying to just get through the rest of winter so we can start taking evening walks again to keep her busy and calm before bed!

  • Yes (raising hand)!  I'm pretty sure it's because they won't take their 3rd nap.  They aren't the best nappers.  We're lucky if we get 1/day.  So they are ready for bed by 530, which is way too early.  My husband & I will play with them in effort to stretch out their bedtime.  Or if he's still at work, I sometimes put on a show.  I don't like letting them watch t.v., but sometimes it's my saving grace.

We postpone our dinner until after they're in bed.  So we don't eat until 830 or 9.  Once the boys are down, then we cook.  That's our routine.  Some days, I make a crock pot meal, so it's ready by the time the boys are in bed.  Crock pot meals are really handy if you have the time to prep it in the morning.

  • I take her swimming or hop in the bath tub with her. She falls asleep right after.
