Rough day at daycare

We had our first lessthanperfect day at daycare today. Little man was so fussy all morning, refusing to sleep, not interested in eating, they texted me said they might send him home if he didn't feel better. He ended up taking a massive, blowoutthediapereverywhere, bright red faced poo seemed to improve but since it was my boss's golf day I left early we came home for nap time.
He's been amazing since we got home spending time on his new floor mat, in the swing giggling all through bath time. Now he's sound asleep in my arms after eating his 3rd 4oz bottle since we came home.

Re: Rough day at daycare

  • Can they really send your baby home for being fussy no fever or other sign of illness??! If this is the case, I'm going to be in trouble when LO starts daycare!

  • Also...glad to hear your LO is having a better day and isn't really ill!

Our daycare is very small. Just a husband and wife team who have converted a portion of their home into an amazing educational daycare so while legally they can't send him home for being fussy. If he's not eating, not peeing his diapers, etc. they can assume there is something wrong.

I am lucky to have an employer who understands the working mom dilemma and is super flexible so I can make the choice to spare my equally amazing daycare providers from having to deal with Mr. Fussy-butt and just go pick him up early.

I did pick him up about 2 hours early yesterday and he finally took a nap at home & woke up his usual, mellow, happy self (after a massive, greenish/brown, blow out poop)

  • I am not trying to open a can of worms since you expressed satisfaction with your daycare, but that sounds really ridiculous to me that they called you about his being "fussy." First of all, what qualifies as "fussy?" Secondly, part of their job is to try to care for his needs, including his fussiness. As long as there is no fever involved and he doesn't seem sick (diarrhea, vomiting, etc), I truly think it's out of line for them to call you and expect you to entertain the idea of picking him up, let alone expecting you to do so. You are paying them for a service. I don't understand why they would burden you with worrying about him if he is nothing more than "fussy."

And truly, I am not meaning any of that in a mean tone at all. I simply don't understand how they think that's appropriate. And for the record, I am a certified teacher and used to work in a daycare, so I guess that's why it is boggling my mind right now.

**Forgot to mention that I am glad he is doing better! Enjoy your extra snuggles!

I think you mis-understood the post - they DID NOT call me. They are nice enough to send texts & pictures throughout the day & during one of our exchanges they mentioned that he was not his usual happy, super-mellow self & was obviously uncomfortable but it wasn't anything they couldn't handle. They NEVER asked me to come get him, I made the choice to pick him up on my own.
