Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Swaddling

My little girl is 12 weeks and sleeps 8 hours at night swaddled. During the day she only takes 20 to 30 minute naps not swaddled. How long before I should stop swaddling her at night? I'm just afraid once we stop she will startle
herself awake multiple times during the night. Thanks!

Re: Swaddling

  • Teh startle reflex diminished between 4 & 6 months, so once that happens you don't need the swaddle. Once the baby rolls over you are supposed to keep them unswaddled (that way she's not on her face with arms down). You've got to kind of wean them off because they get used to it. Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit helped us. My LO sleeps well at night too (in the sleep suit) and only takes 20-30 minute naps during the day no matter what I do (swaddle, don't, sleep suit, etc). So, it might just be the way she naps :(

  • You still have plenty of time to keep using the swaddle. Lots of babies still prefer swaddling until 6+ months. Even when they start rolling, it will take quite a while for them to roll over when swaddled. W has been rolling for a few weeks, but won't even attempt it while fully swadddled. If your baby sleeps well in it I see no reason to change it.
